Question about 1997 Honda Passport

1 Answer

Only recently has my 97 Honda Passport been acting like the transmission slips...I'll be in Drive and the revs jump from 2 to 5 or 6; I'll drop it to 3, and it settles down. Last week, I was in Drive, then went to 3...then back to Drive and it jumped...and the Check Trans light came on.

That is only RPMS Vechile always stays in first gear and cant shift manualy, it is an auto trany,
when you go above 3 RPMs the car seems like it is in neutral and have to let it slow down again and then it will go back into first gear.
    What could the problem be?

HI,

It sounds like one of a few of the following problems:

1. You have a transmission sensor fault.
2. You have a transmission module fault
3. You have a electrical/mechanical fault in the transmission.

You need to get a code reader to extract any codes that this vehicle may have for this transmission fault, this way it can then be quickly narrowed down.

In the mean time check your fluid level and check that the color is still quite reddish and not a brownish color.

If it is brownish then you have a problem inside the transmission.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

    Yes,

The transmission has speed sensors on it which could be faulty and will need to be checked.

Also if you have a transmission control module which can also be giving you problems with shifting. Check your fluid levels also.

The fastest way to check this is to get someone to extract the fault codes thats why the trans check light came on it will have a fault code saved to the ETCM.

Type of fluid for a 1998 Honda passport transmission

you did not state the type of transmission that you have, assuming that it is an automatic transmission.
the transmission used in the Passport models is an Isuzu transmission, so it requires inexpensive and easily available Dexron/Mercon fluid. not special Honda ZF fluid that all other Honda transmissions require. another person said that they use Dexron3 fluid in theirs.
the capacity for the automatic trans. 2 & 4 wheel drive are 9.1 US quarts.

My 1995 honda passport 4x4 looses power and revs up even if i push the gas to the floor it slows down

If it has a manual transmission, your clutch is worn all the way down. If it is an automatic transmission, your transmission needs repair, or is low on fluid.

you select rev and the tranny sends 12v to the lamps.
its that simple and is just a switch.

A/T oil temp indicator light came on while driving? Would drive ok but, starting after stopping, the care acted as if I was not getting enough gas or engery?

The transmission is slipping. Problem could be as simple as the transmission being low on fluid. Check this first. If that's not the problem, it should be taken to a shop for service.

I have a 97 f-250 7.3 with a manual trans. and it wants to jump out of reverse if I dont go to 1st gear and then to rev. first.

Sounds like the shift lever is not coming completely out of 2nd gear. So, by shifting into 1st gear, you recenter the shift lever. You can confirm this by going under the truck and moving the 1st - 2nd lever on the side of the transmission with your hand. If the shifter goes into reverse after you manually recenter the 1-2 lever, then you need to correct the problem that prevents the "normal" recentering of the 1-2 shift lever.

Possibilities are: Bent shift rod; worn shifter; worn shift rod at connection to shift lever on transmission.

How to fill automatic transmission on '97 Honda Passport 4X4

There is a metal fitting bolt close to the bottom of the transmission. You can unscrew that out and if transmission fluid comes out it's good. If this doesn't occur you'll have to get a pump and pump transmission fluid in it. This is the easiest with a lift of course. Don't you hate stupid Japanese ideas. Good luck man
