Question about 2001 Mitsubishi Montero

Driving along looses power slight smoke pull over turn off motor sit 20minutes take off no smoke drives good for 15 miles does it again.it never overheats no water in oil nothing leaking from vehicle.

It is almost definitely a bad alternator, but could also be a limited number of other things. A bad battery terminal could cause this problem as well or other loose or corroded connections. As for your 12 volt reading on the alternator, I should explain a little about electricity. If electricity travelled down a highway, the number of lanes would be the voltage and the speed limit would be the amperage and the wattage would be lanes multiplied by the speed limit. 12 lanes travelling at 2 miles per hour aren't getting anywhere fast. Also, a car battery's charge voltage slightly above its' output voltage, so it should be roughly 13.4 volts up to about 15 volts.

The trucj was sitting outside (current temp 10°F...snowing). We started the truck, let it warm up, n drove for maybe 3 mi when the temp gauge switched all the way th hot and check gauge...


let the vehicle cool then drive it home, don't stop unless you have to and if you do for more than a minuet shut the engine off till you can move again. 3 miles in the snow should not hurt anything. when you get home let the vehicle cool for at least an hour before you touch the radiator cap. when cool take off the radiator cap and see if the radiator is full. if the radiator is full then the thermostat probably stuck shut, if the radiator is empty you probably blew a hose or the thermostat housing cracked along the seam where it's bonded together. i wouldn't drive far like this either way just enough to get home, then get it checked by a professional.

Well, billowing white smoke from the tailpipe is generally antifreeze burning off in the engine, which would indicate either a blown head gasket into a cylinder or a broken fluid passage. In the old days there was a way an automatic transmission could leak trans fluid into the engine and create white smoke too, but that shouldn't apply to your vehicle. Not certain about the noises, but clearly you have some internal damage. You can check the antifreeze level to see if you have lost fluid. You can pull the spark plugs to see if you notice damage to the plugs or deposits on the plugs indicating antifreeze.

Oil light goes on...had a dry stick 4 1/2 qts put in. no oil on ground. after oil change light went on at 70 miles.. on 15 secs then off for 5 miles then on again 15 secs--- off 4 miles--off 3 miles- off 2...


if it's not going onto the ground, and it's not being burned, check the positive crankcase ventilation and the exhaust gas recirculation valves for oil seepage...also check your air filter, if its got oil on it replace the pcv valve.
