I have a 2006 Chevy Cobalt and I have read several posts that sound like the problem I am having. My car runs fine then the engine will start surging--the RPM guage will swing wildly from 500-2000 while driving. This started this past winter and seemed to occur when the temperature was below freezing. When we would stop, the car would die but would restart instantly. It would just stop acting up after about 10-15 minutes. Now, the weather is hot, and the engine surges at times, especially when the AC is on high--I turn the blower down and that seems to ease up on the problem but doesn't totally stop it. But if I am driving slow-less than 30--the car will just suddenly die for no reason and without any warning. Also, the AC will blow cold then will blow warmer air. My husband has a code scanner and it didn't show anything.

I have an 06 cobalt with the same issue and when my engine light finally came on it showed up as evap system malfunctioning. This is for the emissions system. My code shown was P0440. This can be caused by a faulty or loose gas cap, a purge valve, a vent valve, or the evap canister. I am waiting on the purge valve to arrive now so should know if that takes car of mine in a week, but i have already replaced my gas cap and the problem is still there. Hope this helps you some

2006 Chevy Cobalt SS. How to get past the antitheft system on it please.

A nice simple answer, you can't. Think of it this way, the car doesn't know you are the owner, and it is there to stop exactly what you are trying to do. You have two computer ECM and BCM, plus the antitheft module and a number of sensors all trying to stop you. All you have to do is the re-learn procedure. Plan B is an auto electrician or alarm / radio installer or auto locksmith.

30 Minute Re-Learn Procedure
  1. Turn ON the ignition, with the engine OFF.
  2. Attempt to start the engine, then release the key to ON (vehicle will not start).
  3. Observe the SECURITY telltale, after approximately 10 minutes the telltale will turn OFF.
  4. Turn OFF the ignition, and wait 5 seconds .

I have a 2006 Chevy cobalt and it wont take gas, it don't want to idle. It misses when you give it any gas or idling. I noticed that my check engine light started flashing. What can be the issue?

First step is to get the computer codes read. Your local auto parts dealer may read the codes for you at no cost. Once we have the codes, we can advise you further.

I would recommend cleaning the throttle body with carburetor cleaner, remove the air inlet to the throttle body and try cleaning. After cleaning will be hard to start but should solve your issue

I have a 2006 chevy cobalt, check engine light came on, car runs fine, how can I read the codes without a scanner, is it possible?

Your local auto parts store will read them for free, give you a print-out (sometimes) and recommend some popular fixes. Try Auto Zone, or call your local parts outlet.

2007 chevy cobalt I went through water wont start

You're hydrolocked. Pull the sparkplugs out and crank the engine for 30-60 secs. there is a VERY GOOD CHANCE you could have done some major internal damage. Be prepared to replace your engine, but this might work.

Batterty dead. Check engine light/Antifreeze pouring

The main problem could be a well known cobalt ignition issue. check all fuses, wires, and connections if you've worked on cars before and call to see if you still have any warranty left. This should be handled by a chevy dealer or chevy trained mechanic...to isolate the issue fast and avoid repeat visits to get er done.
