Front of engine center pulley the one that the fan is on you unbolt the 4 nuts that hold the fan on first then the belts remove the rad shroud then the alternator bracket power steering pump lower rad hose heater hose then 4 bolts hold the water pump onto the front of engine not hard at all dont be afraid to do it clean the block with a new razor blade glue gaskets on water pump and carefully install bolts after you wire brush them clean do not glob on silicone use only a little bit to hold on gaskets reinstall everything the way it came off

Replacing water pump on 86 chevy monte carlo

Thats interesting - - the engine should start even if the water pump has been removed.
An 86 model would have a V6 or a V8 engine and both use a distributor, have you checked for spark at the plugs and fuel in the carb or injector ??

My 1986 monte carlo wont stay running. It starts up and stops running when i push on the gas it loses power then stalls. I changed the fuel filter, new plugs and wires. i took off my cat to see if it was...

I know you say your timing seems fine but there is not too much that can cause this to happen with theses older car. My first thought was the timing chain might have jumped a tooth causing your cam timing to be off. This is like the only thing I have seen cause this problem with a 305 or 350 I would be checking the timing marks under the water pump to make sure it did not jump they are super easy to get to on theses cars.

This may involve your security system, if so it's best to have a dealership diagnose the situation. They are the ONLY ones with the proper equipment to do this.

Water pump

On the 3.4.... Drain coolant, remove drive belt guard, loosen pulley bolts, remove drive belt, remove pulley, remove water pump. Good idea to check the belt for cracks or wear when doing the pump replacement. Reverse the procedure to install.
