Generally, the thermostat is located in a housing that is connected to the thick upper radiator hose.

This is at then front of the engine where the 2 hose's join above the fan belt pulley.

You will need to remove the fan shroud and the viscous fan which you will need a 19mm socket and a tool to hold the fan clutch to stop it from turning to remove the fan.

Then you can get to the thermostat housing and hose's.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

there is no fan pulley it has electric fans, also 1 large hose and 1 small hose going to aluminum housing which is also oil filter housing--so it sounds differant then what you are talking about?

Its a plastic housing and the thermostat is part of the whole housing also. So you won't be able to get just the thermostat you need to buy the whole housing etc.

SOURCE: how do i replace the thermostat on a 2003 bmw 325i

Remove the fan shroud and fan. Disconnect electrical connector. The hoses have a clip that pulls out part way. A little force is needed when removing the hoses. There are 3 10mm bolts and a 13mm bolt. Loosen the 11mm bolt that the engine hoist bracket is on. Clean off any of the remaining gasket and bolt up the new thermostat. Push the clips on the hoses back into place and push the hoses onto the thermostat until you hear a click from the clip. When filling with coolant be sure to remove the bleeder screw next to the radiator cap to get rid of any air bubbles. It is a plastic phillips screw so don't use too much force when tightening.
