Question about 1991 Nissan Pathfinder

1 Answer

I have a 1991 Nissan Pathfinder with a 3.0 V6 engine. The timing belt broke while I was pulling out on the highway. I was wondering what the chances are that none of my valves got bent?

You're probably in pretty good shape the valves on that engine have a short lift and, fast duration.
Put on a new belt and, pressure test each cylinder before you start the engine up.

Okay. I got the old timing belt out and found that all the teeth were gone where it goes around the crankshaft gear. I put a new timing belt on and lined up the marks, but when I rotate the engine several times the timing marks on the belt move over a few teeth off the camshaft gear marks and no longer line up. I'm using a Haynes manual for this, but am I missing something that they don't say in the book?

just replaced water pump 91 nissan truck vg30e and restarted for few seconds. did ton of research and found my teeth were off about 6 for what it really should have been. did timing exact multiple times and still not right. have strong feeling that it bent some valves and that is now my next project.

Timing marks for 1993 nissan pathfinder 3.0 v6 engine

If this is the same VG30E, 3.0L engine used in the Quest and Maxima, go to the Villager Quest site and look in the engine file. It's all there. the trick to getting the timing belt on, is to have a helper so you can slide the belt on all 3 gears at once.

89/v6 turns over real fast but sounds like no compression

I hate to say this, but it sounds like your timing belt broke. Take the distributor cap off and see if the rotor turns when you turn the engine over, if it doesn't turn then your timing belt is broken and you may have bent valves too.

Timing belt broke is this a low tolorance enging

A 1991 GEO is worth scraping if this is your problem
A water pump is also needed to replace with the belt
It is a rule of thumb for the belt drives the pump as well
Think about selling it to a local kid as his first car that he has to fool with. The monet to fix it is really not worth investing into it
The fuel pump for these cost more than the worth of this car now

94 pathfinder v6 auto 4x4 .engine died nuw wont start ,turns over and tries to fire, maybe the timing belt broke?if so would the valve train be damaged Thanks Barry

This vehicle has an interference engine (v6-VG30E), If the timing belt ran or snapped while running, its very possible the engine is severely damaged. Hopefully this helps!!

How do i pull off the starter on my 1991 pathfinder and can you provide pictures if needed

I copied this directly out of my manual. Don't know how to get you a picture.

Starter removal:

1. Disconnect the negative battery cable from the battery. On models equipped with a V6 engine, raise the vehicle and support it on jackstands.

2. Remove the wires from the starter solenoid. Label the wires and terminals to prevent confusion during installation.

3. Remove the starter motor mounting bolts.

4. Lift out the starter motor and solenoid.
5. Installation is the reverse of the removal procedure.

1994 Pathfinder,A/C belt broke;replaced it, but it will not start

A broken A/C belt should not have caused your engine to stall. It is possible that the timing belt failed, I hope not because it will probably need a valve job if it broke under power.
