Question about Volvo 960

1 Answer

The battery is dead, and I am inexperienced in jumpstarting cars. All the ones I have done were not volvos, and I'm struggling to find the necessary outlets on each car (both cars that I'll be "jumping" together are volvos). I realized that the batteries were under the driver's seat, but where am I to jump then?

My 1996 mercedez e320 only starts when I JumpStart

Connect a voltmeter across the battery terminals. While engine off, if the voltage is below 12V it means your battery is either dead or discharged. Once you've jump-started your car, check the battery voltage again. If it's still low (like below 13.5V) it may mean you have a problem with your alternator.
Let me know the voltages and we'll think what to do next.

Why do i have to keep jumpstarting my 2002 mercedes s 500 it turns on only for a block then need another jump start

have a load test done on the battery as you may have a broken bridge between cells or a dead cell. Check that the battery posts and terminals are shiny clean and tight.

My 96 volvo has problems starting after a cuple days after jumping it

Without some simple tests to provide another clue or two, this is impossible to sort out. You should consider buying a cheap multimeter. Just the cheapest one you can find will be a nice device to have around. If you have one, or get one, with the multimeter set to "DC Voltage", touch the black lead to the - post and the red lead to the + post of the battery. Remember your reading. Now crank the car. Repeat what you did a minute ago with the meter. The voltage should be considerably higher (like between 14 and 16.75, or even more for some cars). This means your alternator is working. That is the clue you wanted because now you can deduce that the battery needs to be replaced. If you read, say 11.5 volts with the vehicle not running and less than 12.5 with the vehicle running, you can strongly suspect that the alternator has failed. BUT -- first take the battery to the nearest auto store, or walmart and have them do a "dead cell" test on it (free). If the battery has a dead cell (highly unlikely with your current circumstances), replace and then retest. If the battery tests ok, then your alternator is not producing.

I was trying to jumpstart my toyta camry 1990 .unfortunately i connected -ve to postive and positive to negative i mean to say REVERSE CONNECTION. i checked all the fuses ,everything seems to be...

please explain in more detail as to how long the leads were on the vehicle ,because if it was just a quick flash then no problem we have all done that but if you had a dead dead battery and then put battery on in reverse and tried to start car then you have cooked everything and it may p?y to just buy another car rather than try to change everything on this one

My mercedes sat for 10 months while I recuperated from injuries. The battery was completely dead. Remote didn't even work. We were able to jumpstart it with battery cables but it won't keep running. Dead...

You will burn out your alternator if you keep on doing this. The alternator is not a charger. If you have a dead battery you should always charge it overnight on a charger. To keep the battery fresh all that you have to do is disconnect the terminals.Yes this is normal because the car has clocks and alarms that drain power even when the key is off. If you let the battery set to long while it is drained it will not take a charge.

Dead Battery wont even stall should I charge it using jumper cables??

You can jumpstart using jumper cables. Then drive car around to get battery charged back up or get a battery charger and charge battery.

Car is completely dead, like somebody shot it dead! No sounds, no light, can't shift out of park into neutral or anything....everything completely warning whatsoever!

Always clean the battery terminals before jumping. An extremely dead battery may not accept a jump as it serves as a 'buffer" instead of helping. If you do get it started, charge battery with a battery charger then have alternator and battery tested for proper operation and check belt condition and tension as well.

Volvo 850 is dead after wrong polarity at charging

It is possible that you have melted a fuseable link. These are heavy guaged wires coming off the positive battery cable. Their purpose is to protect the electric system in the event of such a case.
