Question about Mitsubishi Eclipse

1 Answer

How can I tell when something is wrong with my TCM? About a week ago my transmission would not down shift and my check engin light came on. So I decided to disconnect the ground on the battery and all of a sudden, after reconnecting the ground on the battery, my transmission would down shift.

Took my 2006 Pt Cruiser to Auto Zone scanner showed it needs a TCM. Gears won't shift and check engine light on. If I replace the TCM will it fix the problem?

AutoZone provides a service to read codes, but 99+% of the sales people are not qualified transmission specialists. You need to take your car to a transmission specialist, and have them troubleshoot and diagnose your problem. They can tell you with a good deal of confidence what is wrong, what needs to be replaced, and how much it will cost.

I have a 1999 Dodge Ram 2500 with an automatic transmission the transmission hunts from first to second when I let off the gas it shifts in the second and drives normal after that but this is what happens...

HOt engine, or cold engine or both???????????????
Gas or Diesel? what engine>? 4 speed A/T right?
first off the CEL only glows for smog fails, many other DTC errors
all important , only show up on a real scan tool. even a $9 tool this old car.
is it the tranny or the engine hunting, that takes, skill to know.
any mech , can tell you ,easy.
does the engine run prefect , get to 180F + temp and hold?
does the enigine hold 800 RPM steady hot idle in park.
then select Drive, foot on brake pedal and still hold this normal idle spee?d. , yes, then good.
this hunting, i cant understand that.
does it upshift to all gears, correctly?
and down shift.?
and does it not hold one gear. at cruise? flat ground.
does it not down shift with fast deep throttle.
does not down shift on hills.
exactly when does it hunt, you doing what?, in drive, im guess.
tell driving conditions, and right foot actions.
steady foot.
flat ground,

my FSM has over 50 A/T symtoms. the A/T is complex.
a driver (mech) will do many tests driving to see what works and what dont.. (both)

BTW2: i never pay any attention to any CEL lamp, I SCAN all cars.
The newer the car , the more DTC's , the key is to NOT MISS THEM.
and win.

Your A/T may be electronically shifted, and if yes, it's got a TCM
(either the TCM box or is part of the PCM )
either why. ,make sure the TCM never sees errors, ever.
there are many inputs to any TCM and all must be correct or the tranny will shift wrong, or go to limphome mode.

what tranny,????
here is the wiki.
Transmissions for the Ram
  • A500/42RH-RE lower geared light duty applications found behind the 3.9 L V6,
  • A518/46RH-RE for more heavy duty applications found behind the 5.2 L and 5.9 L V8 engines.
  • A618/47RH-RE for heavy duty use behind the V10 gasoline and Cummins diesel engines. The 47RH was used in 1994 and 1995 model years, while the 47RE was used from 1996 through 2002.
NV3500 and up are manual trans,
so by wiki I see all 3 are electric, SCAN it now , with a full scan tool.

each tanny ending in "E" is a TCM shifted "E"lectronic shifted trans.
so post what you have, as i can not guess.

my guess is 46RH

Starts in a wrong gear (4th gear) and jerks before it go

Run fault codes and look for a faulty TCM unit. THE TCM will also put on the engine light and affect the speedometer operation . Running the fault codes will also identify the sensor associated with the ABS unit.. Seeing as to how you have just bought the car (possibly from a corner used car dealer) I would advise a pressure test done on the transmission to check for the condition of the transmission and have an oil change and the bands and clutch packs adjusted

Transmission -does fine until it warms up, then does not want to shift correctly, drive begins flashing.

d flash mans, tranny fault
so scan it. us the obd2 scan tool, any and scan it.
the A/T IS VERY complex, do the tests shown in the FSM
guessing dont work
but in general (experience)
wont shift correctly dont cut it. (200 parts, and 50 was to mess up)
flare, skips gears, wont up shift, wont down shift, or shifts wrong speed. what gears work, what dont. just a clue and help goes get better
The tranny TCM can go to limphome mode, this mode is very clear.
and covered in the FSM and
one common failure, that happens with high mileage and poor service (not doing a flush at 50k miles)
is stuck in 1st gear, hot. only.
the ATF fluid gets more thin hot and pump output drops
this is usually a vary bad sign.
the Stall test fails.
the pump pressure test fails, hot.
there is no vacuum lines to this electronically shifted trans.
the ended back 1990(about). with old 3speeds.

scan it, could be something slimple like
the PRNDL shift switch fibbing like crazy. (common)
this car has TCM, a transmission brain.
look for OBD2 DTC errors P07xx (trans)
this TCM (part of PCM) function relies on sensor for shifting
they are:
1: TPS
2: engine INPUT rpm
3: tranny output rpm
4: shift selector.
5: ECT (engine temps)
6: ECU part of the PCM calculates load at all times and sends that to the TCM , so that TCM can down shift on hills, or upshift faster on the flat or down hill.
this LOAD feature is what replaced the VACUUM of old days.

The D light , hopefully is just a bad input (cheap)
scan it. and see, its begging for you to do that.

1999 Audi A8 quattro. purchased 2 days ago from used car dealer. 154000 miles. at approx 40mph in town rpm vary, almost like it is trying to decide to shift or not. If you accelerate it shifts but if you...

all are valid areas of concern so the place to start if the fault codes read
the VSS reports on he road speed to the TCM to activate a change
The TCM decides the best ratio and gets indications from the TR sensor as to ratio in use
the other item in the system is the transmission actuator which responds to engine vacuum and selects up or down in the ratio
best if you take it to an accredited professional auto transmission shop for a proper diagnosis and quote

I've owned our 99 Grand Caravan for 3 years and for 3 years occasionally all instruments would quit and I would pound on the dash and it would come back. About 2 years ago the abs quit and the abs light...

the most common is a bad cluster
you have to remove it
that could be a pain but it can be done
after removing the cluster remove the cardboard cover in the back remove circuit panel board and check in the middle for a broken weld here your question for your insterment panel
The Transmission Control Module (TCM) is not communicaring with the PCM.
Check all fuses. It could be a power or ground problem or a ccd bus communication wiring problem.
If not it's likely an internal failure in the TCM.
You may be able to get a schamatic at your local library.
If it's not a power, ground or wiring issue you should take it to a dealer with a DRB III to confirm the diagnosis.

Transmission skips 3rd gear then gears down into proper gear

no transmission stated, of the 5 possible that year.
find another shop, find ASE rated shop
no DTC, no joy here, why post with the key fact missing?
vague, sure, P0700, is the common vague (means see DTCs from TCM )
that code means your lame shop has a TOY grade scanner
that can't scan all jeep codes, see all TCM errors.
the shop manual lists them all.
its free to read.

x2 grounds.
x2 service it , full flush.
x2, scan it right this time,,,

some TCM skip gears in LIMP-IN mode.
in failure mode, you need to fully scan the
TCM. it could be valve body, or, TCM doing it on purpose because VSS is funky or other inputs to the TCM are wrong.
if you dont learn all TCM errors, you will never know ,will you?

worst yet, no transmission stated
44RE (For the big block 5.2L)

to get help , first learn what you have
then tell that first.

2006 Corolla: Check engine light is on - gears shift is not smooth

You have an issue that Toyota knows about; there is a programming problem with the ECM in the vehicle, and Toyota has released a Tech Service Bulletin (TC015-07) to cure your problem.
You probably have a DTC code of P-2716...The ECM needs replaced with an updated unit.
PLUS: this repair should be covered for 96 months of use, or up to 80,000 miles. The replacement ECU will be installed totally for free. Call your local Toyota dealer & get an appointment.

Transmission faul code po700

(DTC) CODE # P0700....Transmission Control System (MIL Request)

Transmission Control Module (TCM) Malfunction or Failure.

P0700 Information Code

The Transaxle Control Module (TCM) monitors the malfunction of sensors and actuators relating to transaxle control. If any malfunction is detected, the TCM informs the PCM by sending a signal (P0700 code). P0700 means that a code has been set in the TCM.

This code is for information ONLY. If this code is present, check for transaxle codes.

So basically, the P0700 code is telling you to check the TCM for a transaxle DTC. The TCM can not turn on the check engine light so it has the PCM do it. It needs to be scanned with trans capable scanner to see what the trans code or problem is. You should have 1st, 2nd, and Reverse because the car is operating in limp-mode. Since you said the speedometer doesn't work, my guess would be a faulty (VSS) vehicle speed sensor.
