Hi, the crank sensor is located on the drivers side rear of engine just below the starter. Very easy to replace. Once you replace the sensor and start the truck the check engine light is going to illuminate. You must preform a crankshaft variation learn. unfortunately, you need a scan tool to preform this task.
Take care

3.1l. Where is the crankshaft position sensor?

Which one? There are two crankshaft position sensors on the 3.1L.
One is the 24X sensor. It is located behind the crankshaft pulley, installed into the timing cover. The other sensor, the 7X sensor (this is the one that is it fails will cause a no-start condition), is located on the outside of the engine block, close to the crankshaft.

Where is the crankshaft sensor located?

You will find the crank sensor on the right side (passenger) just on the back side of the seam between the engine and the transmission where the flex plate that connects them is located. It is just above the surface of the differential housing. It has a connector that you would separate by lifting gently on the tab. Then unbolt the old sensor and pull it up out of the housing.

I hope this helps, thanks for useing FixYa.

Looking for location of crankshaft position sensor on 2000 mercury villager with 3.3l engine. parts store says there are 2 per vehicle. found one at front of engine. any idea where the 2nd one would be?

The 3.3/3.8L crankshaft sensor is located on the rear of the transmission housing, above the differential housing The bottom of the sensor is positioned next to the drive plate. Remove the 10mm bolt holding the sensor in place and remove the sensor. Install the new crankshaft sensor.
Install crankshaft sensor bolt and tighten. Connect wiring. merry christmas !!

The crank sensor is located on the engine near the flywheel axis of the crankshaft.

Location of the crankshaft position sensor on the 3.0L engine 91154g20.gif
Location of the crankshaft position sensor on the 3.3L and 3.8L engines 91154g21.gif
NOTE: On the 2.4L engine, the crankshaft position sensor is mounted to the engine block behind the alternator, just above the oil filter. On the 3.0L, 3.3L and 3.8L engines, the crankshaft position sensor is mounted on the transaxle housing, above the vehicle speed sensor.
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Raise and safely support the vehicle.
  3. Disconnect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  4. Unfasten the sensor mounting screw, then remove the sensor from the vehicle by pulling it straight out.
To Install:
NOTE: If the sensor removed is going to be re-installed, clean off the old spacer on the sensor face. A new spacer must be attached to the sensor face before installation. If the sensor is being replaced, be sure that a paper spacer is attached to the sensor face.
  1. Install sensor and push the sensor in until contact is made. While holding the sensor in this position, install and tighten the mounting bolt to 105 in. lbs. (12 Nm).
  2. Connect the crankshaft position sensor electrical connector.
  3. Lower the vehicle.
  4. Connect the negative battery cable.
