Question about 1992 Ford Ranger

1 Answer

1992 ford ranger squeaking! I changed out the water pump and ideler pulley, still squeaks. Itook the belt off to eliminate all pulleys and it still sqeaked. The noise is comming from the distributor are, in looking on line mention of a camshaft synchronizer cam to play. In looking on line can not find part that would match for the year. Does a 1992 ranger 3.0 have a camshft sychronizer? Where would the squeak be comming from? Distributor? in need of help

Yes, it has one, but i doubt it can generate the noise;it just has a simple , small plastic bushing that you can oil it just to be sure. The most likely cause is the distributor , the rotor is rubbing on the cap.

What I am hearing is jsut a rotor rubbing. I have seen other posts where the camshaft position sensor was making the noise and the motors had seized in some rangers.

NO fix! I put a stethascope on the distributor after I replace cap and rotor. I could hear the squeak comming from the distributor. I had a felling this was not going to solve the problem!

In that case the only thing in the distributor that can make the noise is the brass bushing - oil it. In desperation you can take the entire distributor and dip it in oil then wipe off the contacts.
But in no way it can cause the engine to fail. BTW you can find the camshaft position sensor only on the V6 Vulcan engine, not the Cologne.

I have what sounds like a squeaky bearing sound at any speed. Varies with RPM. Looking for likely culprits.

you're on the right track, removing the serpentine belt and manually rotating/ spinning the pulleys listening for a dragging, or grinding. If its very bad you may even see a outward movement. hope this helps!

Does squeaking coming from automoble water pump indicate water pump bearing is bad

If you take the belt off and there is no noticeable in/out, up/down, or side to side movement of pulley and there is no noise when rotating, a new belt may be all you need. Make sure you check ALL of the other belt driven components including idler pulleys and belt tensioner pulley. A worn tensioner can squeak also.

The a/c tensioner sometimes get cocked when the spring inside is bad. Sometimes you need adjust the p/s pulley inward or outward depending on how the squeak changes.

Need to tighten serpintine belt

That car should have an auto-tensioner. the spring in it could be tired and letting the belt squeak. run vehicle watch for a pulley that bounces. also idler pulleys can squeak on those fords, rangers included. belts stretch over time if it is old too then change it also.

I have replaced the belt and tension pulley, but still have a squeaking problem

Could be one of the other pulleys or a bearing in the water pump or alternator.
You can use a section of garden hose or heater hose to listen for the sound.

My truck is sqeaking around the belt? I have replaced the tenion pulley and the idler pulley but it is still sqeaking?

if the belt is dry replace it to for it will squeak as well.
also a glaze can be on all pulleys so wire brushing them all will clean the glaze off and eliminate the squeaks too
