Not necessarily. What do you mean by "gone"? Did it melt? Is there a hole in it? If you had a condition that caused 1 piston to fail, that same condition may not be present in the other pistons. You may be able to replace just that 1 piston. On the other hand, it may be more economical to simply have the engine rebuilt or a new engine installed. There are many factors to consider and I could use more information if you have any.

This keeps happening in my 3.4L now it doesn't start

that plug is getting hit by your piston so timing belt has gone .and you have an interface engine so all the top half of your engine is now gone ,so head is gone and your pistons.

I have a 425 CI 7 litre Cadillac V8 in a 1979 Diamanté. Once the engine is up to temperature a rattle like noise comes into the engine under acceleration. The noise goes when the throttle is

You need to find where the noise is coming from. On the top could be lifters, valves or low octane gas causing a ping. On the bottom could only one thing. Rod knock. The bearings for the pistons and crankshaft are worn.

My 1997 cadillac deville, northstar w/85, regular oil changes, burns almost 2 quarts of oil every change. It is not leaking.

If your car is losing oil, and if there is no evidence of oil leaking, there is no question that it is either losing it through piston rings or through the head (head gasket or valve guides).
Best thing to do is use a HEAVIER WEIGHT oil than specified for the vehicle when new, regularly monitor your oil level and be sure it never falls below one quart low, and consider having the engine overhauled when you start noticing a performance deficit or hear mechanical noise (such as rod knock) from the engine.

Did all the things you suggested including new tires! compression test would show valve problemm

compression tests identify problems with---head gaskets --- cracked heads , blocks--- valves not seating correctly---worn rings ---cracked pistons--- and general condition on the engine

My son thinks his a mechanic experimenting ,place a fan as big as palm size in the air induction hose ,he start the escalade and test drive ,he heard a grinding and then knocking sound in the engine, then...

could be the oil pump has failed grinding sound then knocking sound could also be the timing is out or failing that something forren has got into the engine. check all these out and don't run the engine you are making the engine worse. if pump for the oil has gone and the engine has been run can mean a new engine. if timing belt has moved could be a new head will be needed. and pistons. failed oil pump does more damage in the long run as the hole engine needs oil.

My 2005 Cadillac CTS uses a quart Oil between oil changes, what could be the reason. There is no pooling under the motor and buring smell or smoke and the car only has 68000 miles

It's normal for most cars with significant miles on there to use oil, you won't see or smell the oil being used because some of it gets burned internally between the piston and the piston rings, I wouldn't worry about it until you start seeing blue smoke coming out of your exhaust while the engine is running, in that case your piston rings are worn aqnd it's tome for a new or rebuilt motor.

I have white smoke coming from the tail pipe of my 1996 Cadillac DeVille. Not a blown head gasket, no water in the oil. Could it be my pistons or just needing new seal. Am I burning oil or have an oil leak...

hi... it all depends on the colour of the smoke... usualy blueish smoke will mean it is oil burning and your piston rings may be getting worn if it is black then it might be running too rich etc.. a little bit of water is fine infact usualy it is a good sign that your engine is not running rich or lean so it is pointing towards oil seals... also if it was running rich it would probably do it more when it was cold

My timing belt broke in my dodge stratus mechanic says engine is totalled is it ?

The engine is considered a high tolerance engine and most likely the engine is gone. This means that there is no room for the valves and pistons to be in the piston chamber at the same time, As the piston goes up, the valve's need to be in the close position or there's going to be contact and with the timing belt gone. The pistons will be hitting the valves. Replacement of pistons and valves, at this point you might as well rebuilt the whole engine. Sorry for the bad news friend.

How do you know if a piston ring has gone on a Ford Puma?

You cannot see a broken piston ring without taking the engine apart. If there is a broken piston ring you may or may not hear or see any evidence of it. If the piston itself is broken you will hear, see and maybe smell it with burning oil.

Engine knocking

Hi,
Good news is - I don't think you need a new engine.

As there are many moving parts that could create a knocking sound, it usually needs careful inspection to identify where it is from.
I will give a list of some of the causes and remedies. Yours will probably be one of them, but unless I was there - it could be any.

Loose exhaust component (causes rattles and thumps) - replace parts or joints.
Loose Engine mounts - Engine will move about a lot more than normal - Replacement of mounts.
Fraying Belts - causes continual ticking or slapping - Replace belts and check tension.
Timing is off - bad running, lack of power, pre ignition or knocking at low revs. Check timing belt - Replace, Tune engine.
Cracked valve - slight misfire worse at low revs - Replacement valves.
Clutch Problems - Broken spring or loose bolt - Check clutch plate - replace clutch plates.
Older engines - often accompanying smoke -
Broken Piston ring - continual ticking or occasional misfire - Replace Piston rings
Worn Piston bearings - Piston Slap - Replacement of all piston bearings.

Transmission Problems (only heard when in gear or with clutch out) - Broken gear teeth or worn bearings - Replacement of Transmission or rebuild.

Some of these remedies require engine removal and strip down, others are a simpler fix.
