Question about 1995 Acura Integra Coupe

1 Answer

The temp gauge floats. When it looks like it is going to go into the red, if I increase the rps to 1800 or 1900 the needle instantly falls back to normal range. What is going on?

With vehicle cold I put it in gear and go maybe 100' and temp gauge is topped out. When I stop the temp returns to normal in 3 seconds.

the temp gauge sends the power from the gauge to the sender unit which is a variable ground. That means that as the coolant heats up , the resistance in the sender is decreased and the current through the gage increases ans so the needle goes up
when that wire is shorting out some where the gauge will go to hot and when that short is removed the needle comes back down to cold
so that means that you will need to trace the wire along for where it is rubbed through or get an accredited auto electrician in to find the fault

If you have a viscous fan hub then have it replaced as it is not drawing air through the radiator at idle or slow speed (crawling traffic). Check that are no air locks in the system as they will cause heating problems.

I would check to see if the cooling fans are coming on. The fans could be bad or you may have a blown fan fuse or fan relay.

My temp gauge is going to the red , I turn my heater on and it does go down somewhat . Motor doesn't really seam that hot but might be . Thanks

It sounds like the cooling fan is not working, with the motor off look in front of the motor and there is a fan or 2, check the wiring and plugs, some times they corrode and can be cleaned with alloy wheel cleaner then water then spray oil in them otherwise the fuses and the thermo switch need checking.

Coolant gauge jumping into the red as soon as car starts

If the needle flicks all the way to "Hot" with the IGNITION ON, but without starting the car, you probably have a faulty temperature sender. To confirm it is faulty (without proper test equipment) just disconnect the wire going to it, if the reading falls back to zilch that's what is causing it. The temp sender is often located on/near the thermostat on most cars. Temp Senders are easy enough to change, and are available at all auto parts stores. Check out the availability and price at your local auto store and decide for yourself if you want to have a crack at it.

Thermostat

I would say its the temperature sensor that is your issue, replace it and see what happens but make sure its the right one. Theres one for the gauge and light and one for the computer, the one you need to change will be the one that when you unplug it the gauge will fall to cold. They are normally either in a cylinder head or in the thermostat housing.
