Any recently work in there? Its possible that the some of the nuts and bolts loose gasket about catalytic converter. Are you sure it is coolant, it should be pink or green, and have a sweet smell. Otherwise it could be washer fluid leaking from a headlight nozzle for instance. If the system was pressure checked, and the engine does not overheat, you may have to look for another source for your spillage.

I advise not to use any of the stop coolant leak products, as they will cause more harm than good down the road. If you are noticing that much coolant loss, you have to be able to see where it is coming from.

Also, keep in mind and check the water pump; this is located on the front of the engine. I doubt that the problem is there.

The leak only happening when the engine cools is not that strange, if it is a cracked metal pipe, when it expands through heating the crack can seal, and then when the engine cools, the crack opens again which then causes coolant loss. You need to get the car on a lift and have a look from underneath.

Tell us news.

I would put a pressure tester on the radiator and see where it leaks out at 15psi to 16psi.

It would help to have the vehicle on a lift to see where it comes out.

It could be a radiator, overflow tank, hose, by your description.

I wish you luck on diagnosing this coolant leak.

Some type of fluid leaking around the left front tire

Had a similar issue. The leak though, in front of the left-front tire was the windshield washer pump seal. Check to see if that fluid is washer fluid. If so, then thats likely the problem.

Leaking fluid around left front wheel of 2001 Audi A6

If it is near the tire it is brake fluid. The brake fluid reservoir is back by the firewall driver side of engine compartment. Your car uses DOT 4 brake fluid.

For 1998 Audi A6 the fuse box is located on the left side of dashboard behind a plastic cover (for left hand steering wheel vehicle). Open the door first. On inner face of the plastic cover you will find the fuse diagram.

01 audi a4 alternator fuse location

For 2001 Audi A4 the fuse box is located on the left side of dashboard behind a plastic cover (for left hand steering wheel vehicle). On inner face of the plastic cover you will find the fuse diagram. But the alternator don't have any fuse! You can check up electrical connections. If you don't find anything wrong the alternator is out of order. Replace brushes inside, or voltage regulator (see picture below)!

I want to know where the thermostat is located

Assuming you mean the thermostat for the coolant...
For the 1.9TDI lump, look at engine, right side, low down, where several pipes join. It's held in by a pair of (I think) hex-head bolts. The heads can't be seen from the front because they face down & backward. Expect to lose coolant.
