There is a sensor on the engine that measure engine revolutions, that sends a signal to the PCM (power train control module) which then sends a signal to the instrument cluster causing the gauge to move accordingly. Where can i find the rpm sensor on a 2001 ford ranger

There is no tach - rpm sensor . This information comes from the PCM - engine computer .
Tachometer
The tachometer is a 6,000 rpm tachometer. It has four terminals labeled "B" (12 to 14.5V), "S" (EDIS tach signal in), and two "G" (cylinder selection grounds). The top ground (G) terminal is open on a 4-cylinder engine vehicle, and is grounded on a 6-cylinder engine vehicle.

  • The tachometer is inoperative
  • Powertrain control module (PCM).
  • Circuitry.
  • Tachometer.
  • Instrument cluster printed circuit.
  • Go To Pinpoint Test F .
  • Incorrect tachometer indication
  • Circuitry.
  • Instrument cluster printed circuit.
  • Tachometer.
  • Go To Pinpoint Test G .

Measure the resistance between the instrument cluster C220c pin 8, circuit 398 (BK/YE), harness side and ground.
  • Is the resistance less than 5 ohms?
Yes GO to G2 .

No REPAIR the circuit. TEST the system for normal operation.
Measure the resistance between the tachometer and the instrument cluster printed circuit terminals; refer to the following chart:
    Instrument Cluster Printed Circuit Terminal Tachometer Terminal C220a pin 13 C220a pin 15 S C220b pin 2 G C220c pin 8 G (6 CYL.)

  • Are the resistances less than 5 ohms?
Yes GO to G3 .

No INSTALL a new instrument cluster printed circuit. REFER to Instrument Cluster Printed Circuit in this section. TEST the system for normal operation. G3 CHECK FOR CLEAN TACH OUT (CTO) CIRCUIT OPEN OR SHORT Check for CTO circuit open or short. Refer to Powertrain Control/Emissions Diagnosis (PC/ED) manual.
  • Is the CTO circuit OK?
Yes INSTALL a new tachometer. REFER to Gauges in this section. TEST the system for normal operation.

No GO to G4 .
G4 CHECK FOR CORRECT PCM OPERATION Disconnect all PCM connectors. Check for:
  • corrosion
  • pushed-out pins
Connect all PCM connectors and make sure they seat correctly. Operate the system and verify the concern is still present.
  • Is the concern still present?
Yes INSTALL a new PCM. REFER to Section 303-14 . CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the PCM self-test.

No The system is operating correctly at this time. Concern may have been caused by a loose or corroded connector. CLEAR the DTCs. REPEAT the self-test.
Your best bet mite be to take it to a qualified repair shop.

Why does my rpm not work?

Tachometer
The instrument panel cluster (IPC) displays the engine speed as determined by the engine control module (ECM). The IPC receives a serial data message from the body control module (BCM) indicating the engine speed. The tachometer will default to 0 RPM if:
?€¢
The ECM detects a malfunction in the engine speed sensor circuit.

?€¢
The IPC detects a loss of serial data communication from the BCM.

Tachometer not working fuses good ware dose tachometer get its siginal

From the ECM - engine computer ! Suggest you take this to a ASE certified repair shop or the Chevy dealer an have it diagnosed ! Could be the gauge itself .Looking at fuse's is no good ,there is not a fuse just for the Tachometer .
The engine control module (ECM) creates the engine speed signal. The engine speed is sent to the IPC over a discreet wire from the ECM. The instrument panel cluster (IPC) converts the signal to a tachometer position indicating the engine speed.

Speedometer works but not the rpm gauge 98 Tahoe 5.7

The speedometer is operated differently then the tachometer. Tachometer
The tachometer displays the engine speed in revolutions per minute (RPM). Voltage pulses are taken from the ignition control module (ICM) (Gasoline) or the generator (Diesel) and sent to the tachometer. Solid state circuits convert the pulse frequency in order to move the pointer of the tachometer.

2003 chevy trailblazer tach inop

The tachometer in your truck is controlled by the Instrument Panel Cluster (IPC) module, which recieves engine speed information from the Powertrain Control Module (PCM) via the digital communications network in your truck.

There may be an engine control problem that is causing your engine to run rough and cause your tachometer to not operate as well. However, there is no way that the tachometer itself is going to make the engine run poorly. The tachometer has no fuse of its own that does not also affect several other electrical circuits in your truck. Looking for the fuse as a possible fix for your problem is totally useless.

What you need to do is to scan your onboard computer network, incluuding the PCM, BCM, IPC and the ABS modules to see where the problem is located. It may even be a communications network error. There is no way of knowing for sure without establishing communications with the network and interfacing with all of the control modules that use the tachometer signal to perform certain functions.

PLEASE NOTE: Generic OBD code readers CANNOT perform the functions that will be needed to diagnose and repair this problem.
