Question about 1995 Ford Windstar

My A/C is not working properly when set on cold setting warm air flows . I checked the bypass switch and my A/C clutch is working and the freon levels are on the dealers specs what else can it be ?

The air blend door directs the cold and hot air as selected to the desired vents. The door is controlled by vacuum lines and vacuum switches.
The following link shows the vacuum diagram and other parts. If you can't find a problem with the lines and switch, the door it's self may be stuck.

A/C compressor spins, but why is there no cold air?


You may need a shop manual to get the wiring diagrams and test procedures.
The ac compressor gets power from several sources and those would need to be checked. The control on the dash, the low and high pressure switches, the relay, and so on.
If the compressor is ok, you should be able to jumper the clutch like you did and feel one line cold and the other line warm if freon is flowing thru the system.

AC Cooling problem


Well the blend door theory would work if the ac never got cold. But you say it starts out cold and then gets hot.
Its possible the system is freezing up due to lack of air flow thru the evaporator, or a blockage in the freon lines.
You would need to watch the high and low pressure gauge readings as the system gets warm.
You may need professional help for this.

Hello, You have two switches which work off the pressure of the Freon. Both of these switches cut off the power to the compressor. One is for HIGH pressure and the other is for LOW pressure. Check for power at the compressor clutch connector harness while the controls are set and the engine is running. You may have power and a bad clutch.

When you say that the Freon pressure is good, does that mean the pressure is within the proper range? Too much Freon will make the HIGH switch cut off power and too little will make the LOW pressure switch cut off power.

The ideal amount(ozs) of Freon is what is recommended by the Manufactuer and it will provide a moderate amount of pressure of about 35psi-40psi. You can borrow pressure gauges, called Manifold gauges to measure your system at autoparts stores with loaner programs.

The low pressure side of the system is the one you use to induce the Freon to go into an empty system. You can bypass this switch by taking off the connector and putting a "U" shaped jumper into the harness and the compressor clutch should get power to LOCK up all of the time.

You can take off the switch connector at the compressor clutch and then check for power when bypassing the HIGH pressure switch if the LOW pressure switch does not make the system get power. Only, really only bypass the HIGH pressure switch with the clutch connector disconnected. The HIGH switch is there to prevent damage to all of the components from seals to lines to every piece of Freon hardware in the car. Bypassing with the A/C clutch disconnected will allow you to know if power is getting to the compressor clutch.

I have freon, and there are no leaks and had a air compressor put in 2 years ago but my car is blowing hot air only


There are a few things that can cause this. First off, make sure that the compressor is turning on when you turn on the AC switch. With the AC on full blast, look at the engine, locate the compressor and make sure that the center hub (the clutch) is spinning, not just the pulley around it that the belt rides on.

If the clutch is not spinning, or if it cycles on and off repeatedly, then your AC compressor is not functioning properly. This could be due to a failed compressor or to a low level of freon in the system.

If the clutch is spinning, then the next thing you should check is your freon level, get a temperature-dependent basic freon gauge, (like the one I posted in the link at the bottom) hook it up, set the outside air temperature on the gauge and then it will show you the ideal freon pressure level. What most people do not know is that having too much freon in a system will cause it to blow just as warm as an under-filled system. The freon level has to be in the "sweet spot" for it to properly work.

If your freon is at the proper level and your AC clutch is on and functioning then it could possibly be the AC switch in your instrument panel, or one of a couple of different parts in the engine compartment, but 90 percent of the time the problem will be found within the bounds of what I just listed. Air conditioner not cold


Do you hear a clicking sound with a/c on, coming from under the hood, if so that's a sign that the a/c system is low on freon, some time when freon is to low the a/c compr won't come on at all, the system has a low pressure switch that won't let the compr come, so the compr won't get damage due to low on freon, have it service (recharge) and have them put some dye in there also, that way they will be able to check for leaks, freon don't wast, there has to be a leak some where's, that's the reason for the dye, if it's a very small leak, they might not be able to find it then, but when it happens again, with a UV light they will be able to look for the stain from the dye, and that's where the leak is at.

1998 Town Car A/C Blows Hot Air But Is Charged Up


Hi - There may be 2 separate problems. On my 1991 Lincoln Town Car, there is a Thermal Blower Lockout sensor that disables the heater from blowing until the engine temperature reaches a specific temperature. This way if you have vent or floor settings and 90 degrees set and it is winter, you won't get blasted with cold air. When the vehicle warms up, the TBL circuit enables the climate control to blow the hot air. If you use the flr/def instead of the floor or vent control, the TBL should not prevent the heater from working even with a cold engine. On my car, the TBL went bad and always prevented hot air from blowing on the floor and vent settings, even when the engine was hot. Another thing to check is a thermal limitor resistor. It is designed to cut off the blower at very hot temperatures, except if the blower fan is in the hi setting.

As far as the A/C is concerned, can you verify if the clutch is engaging or not? A rapid cycling of the clutch is an indication of low freon. If you are absolutely sure that you are fully charged on freon, I think there are 2 possible causes: (1) Bad pressure switch on the accumulator is indicating low freon that is telling the compressor not to work; (2) a blocked orifice tube.

Make Sure Your A/C System Has Enought Freon In It, There Is a Low Freon Pressure Switch
In The Electrical System, Usually, 50-60 PSIG or Less On The Gauges, Will Indicate Low Freon, When Freon Is Low The Compressor Is Dis-engaged To Prevent Compressor Damage.
1] Low Freon
2] Bad Low Pressure switch
3] Blowen Fuse[s]
4] Electrical Problem[s]
[a] Digital Climate Controlled ?
Climate Control Self Diagnose From Button's On Unit, OEM Manual Explains This,
If Yor Auto Has Digital Climate Control.
5] Bad Compressor DC Coil

Note: Does The Compressor Engage, Click-On When Button Is Pressed, But Getting
Only Warm Air?
Is One Of The Compressor Aluminum Tube's Cold, Be Careful Other Is Really Warm/Hot,

heater Coil Hot Air].
If Your Auto Is Vaccum Controlled, Can You Changed From Bottom, Dash,
Defrost Air Flow?, Yes, No Vaccum Lost Feeding Controller, Still Might Have
Bad Diaphram Blending Hot Air w/Cold If Your Have Cold Alum-Tubing In
engine Compartment.
If Digital Climate Controlled, Might have Diaphram's, Vaccum Controlled or
electrical Servo's Controlled vs Diaphram [Vaccum] Controlled.
This Might Help, Hopefully, This Is Just For Starter's, There More To Some System's
and Without The OEM Mgr's Manual[s] You/Be Would Be Lost, especially w/Electrical.

I have a 2000 dodge ram 1500. The air conditioner blows just warm air. The system was working when engine was shut off but did not work properly upon restart today. The AC/Max A/C switch seems to work...


If the compressor is outputting cold freon maybe the vent in the dash is not opening to allow the air to flow thru the condenser. Try operating the heat/cool switch and the recirculting air control in an effort to get it to open the damper.
