If I could trace the lines I would. I can't trace them from the master cylinder to the bottom of the firewall after that it's easy peasy.I have four lines on the master one in the front on the top, one in the front on the bottom, one in the back coming off of the side and one in the back on the bottom. I know which one is the problem from the brake to the firewall however I can't trace from the bottom of the firwall to the master.

  • punkierthanu Aug 03, 2010

yes I am trying to determine which line to remove, there is a clamp that holds all four lines together on the firewall that I can not get to, so when I wiggle the bad line they all move together. From the bottom of the car looking up the fire wall all the lines are intermingled and it is impossible to tell which one is which, from the top of the engine looking down they go into the clamp side by side and it is easy to tell which line is which.

  • punkierthanu Aug 04, 2010

Yes I was repairing both rear lines. One I could tie into under the car but the other one I had to tie into further up the line on the fire wall so I had to unhook it from the master cylinder, I figured out which line it was and fixed the problem. While not actually answering my question, I still appreciate the time and information you contributed so thank you.

The LF and RR are in an independent circuit of the RF, LR wheels. The master cylinder already has the lines hooked up in a way that if you trace the lines, you can make your own diagram.

Are you trying to determine which line to remove? Is it because one of your lines is leaking?

If so, then you can cut the line that is leaking (due to rust) and pull on it and have a friend look above at the master cylinder for movement of the line in question.

    Does that make sense?

I read that a brake scan tool is used to bleed the brakes of the 1997 ford escort. One might be able to bleed the brakes and see where it squirts out.

The ABS system on 1994-96 models does not require any special procedures or tools and is covered in the bleeding procedure for non-ABS systems at the start of this section.

The ABS systems on 1997-99 models requires the use of a scan tool that must be able to perform the System Bleed Function to purge the air from the Hydraulic Control Unit (HCU). An appropriate scan tool would be the New Generation Star (NGS) tester 418-F048 (007-00500) or its equivalent.

    1. Start the vehicle and let the engine idle normally.

    2. Following the tool manufacturer's instructions, attach a scan tool capable of performing the System Bleed Function to the Data Link Connector (DLC).

    3. Depress the brake pedal to half of the full travel position.

    4. Access the Function Test mode on the scan tool and activate the System Bleed Function.

    5. Manually bleed the brake system as follows:

      1. Clean the area around the master cylinder filler cap and remove the cap.

      2. Fill the reservoir with clean brake fluid and install the cap.

    WARNING
Be careful not to spill brake fluid on painted surfaces, as it can destroy the finish. If any brake fluid is spilled, rinse the area immediately with water.

      1. Repeat the master cylinder bleeding procedure at the front master cylinder outlet fitting.

      2. Position the correct box-end wrench on the brake bleeder on the right rear wheel.

Always bleed the longest line first, which is the right rear line.

      1. Attach one end of a clear rubber hose to the brake bleeder screw and the other end into a container half full of clean brake fluid.

      2. Loosen the bleeder screw while an assistant apply the brake pedal slowly through its entire travel.

      3. Close the brake bleeder and then have the assistant release the brake pedal.

      4. Continue bleeding the right rear wheel until the fluid is free of air bubbles.

DO NOT allow the master cylinder to run out of brake fluid. Only use fresh DOT 3 or equivalent brake fluid from a closed container.

      1. Repeat the procedure on the left rear wheel, then the right front, and finally the left front wheel.

      2. Throughout the brake bleeding process, continually check the brake master cylinder and top off the fluid as required.

    1. Repeat the procedure, performing a total of two System Bleed Functions and two manual bleed cycles.

    2. If the brake pedal is spongy, repeat the brake bleeding procedure.

    3. Disconnect the scan tool and check the fluid level.

    4. Test drive the vehicle and check for proper operation.

You could be liberal and change both rear lines, one at a time. If one goes underneath the car, the other one may go soon after.

Probably a really simple question, but on a Mercury Mystique 1997 (manufactured 1996) brake master cylinder (with ABS), which port, front or rear, leads to the front wheel section of the ABS module?

Off the master cylinder. The front tube controls the rear brakes. And the back one controls the front brakes. Just a note. I don't know which year they started doing this, but, the front right brake goes/ties in to the left rear brakes. left front to right rear. This set up runs off the ABS module to the brakes.

How to bleed abs brakes when air is in master cylinder

Abs brakes have to be bled in the order the manual states, you will need a power bleeder then follow instructions in the manual. it is the abs cylinder that is hard to get the air out of, imposable if the instructions are not followed .

2001 ford windstar lx master cylinder new i replaced but abs n brake light come on

Needs to have code reset for abs by a obd2 code reader with abs or find a parts house or shop that will reset it. Brake light coming on did you bleed the master cylinder out by connecting rubber lines to ths plastic insert ******* then acuating the master cylinder til all air is pumped out of master cylinder if that was not done then you will need to bleed all brakes until air is out of system that should turn brake light off

The ABS light came on the car stop for a minute after a while I cut the car back on and it started. what is a ABS and where is it located on a ford taurus 1996 car.

The "ABS" or Anti-lock Brake System is exactly that. When the brake pedal is pressed in a harsh or panic manner the "ABS" senses the tires locking up or skidding. It releases just enough brake pressure to allow the tire to rotate thereby giving control back to the driver. It allows the shortest stopping distance. The "ABS" control module will be located next to the Brake Master Cykinder in the engine compartment and attached by steel brake lines. If the "ABS" light is coming on then the system is malfunctioning and should be checked as soon as possiable.

Abs stays on . will this damage brakes

NOT REALLY BUT IN CASE OF A ACCIDENT OR SUDDENT BRAKE YOUR BREAKS ARE NOT GONNA PERFORMED AS INTENDED. THE ABS IS TO CONTROL YOUR TIRES FROM LOCKING AND CAUSEING YOU TO LOOSE COMPLETE CONTROL OF A PANIC BREAK. CHECK THE FLUID LEVER ON THE MASTER CYLINDER RESERVOIR, AND IF THAT OKAY. THE NEXT THING TO IS TO CHECK ALL 4 ABS SENSOR ON YOUR TIRES FOR DIRTY METAL OR DAMAGED. 90% OF THE ABS PROBLEMS ARE DUE TO JUST BEEN DIRTY OR THE WIRE BEEN DAMAGED DUE TO HITTING OVER THE ROAD. ALSO WORNED BRAKE SHOES. HOPE THIS HELPS. TO MAKE IT SIMPLE YOU CAN GO TO AUTO ZONE AND THEY WILL LEND YOU A SNANNER AND THAT WAY YOU KNOW EXACTLY WHAT TIRE SIDE IT IS. SEND ME A FEEDBACK THANSK

I replaced the mst cyl. how do I bleed the ABS sys to get the air out? 97 ford F-150

You bleed it like you would a normal system but you must use the boost assist to do it, in order to do this start the truck pump the brakes three times and bleed that cylinder farthest away from the master cylinder do this twice or until you get clear fluid to run out. add fluid for every cylinder before moving on. Do this for each wheel and after doing all four wheels you should be ready to go. If it feels mushy you will have to bleed it a second time. But you must have the engine running to bleed the brakes unless you have a power bleeder. You may want to bleed the master cylinder first to do this add fluid to the cylinder then pump brakes three times crack the front line open and allow it to bleed air rout of the line do the same for the rear master cylinder once yo get solid fluid from the master cylinder you can dot the same for the ABS then do the wheel cylinders and wheel calipers. This needs to be done sometimes, be sure to never let the master cylinder run out of fluid and check it each time you bleed the wheel cylinders.
