Open Question

2000 camaro 3.8, check engine light po303, runs rough at idle only, It has good blue spark at coil and plug, fuel pressure is 45psi running (has vacumm regulator) compression in #3 is 100psi (Yuk) but I know it's enough to fire that cyl., runs great past Idle, no hesitation, What am I missing ?

I checked for vacuum leaks, none, I'll try the swapping the injector in the morning, Actually compression on a healthy engine is 170, and that's scary, I have no way to check for bleed off, but I am gong to check compression in #1 and #5 cyl.
I have a feeling it's a head gasket gone between the cyl.
    I'll let you know.

It doesn't matter if in park or in gear, same rough idle, no worse one way or the other

Well I finished the compression test only to find out that all cyl. but #1

All cylinders tested ok except #1. Try a wet cylinder test on that one inject a shot of oil in it and retest.

    #3 cyl. at 100psi

Try the wet test to see if we can figure out where the low compression may be coming from. Or consider getting combustion leak tester to check for HC gases leaking into the coolant. If working on cars its a invaluable tool for around 40 to help determine if there are head gasket issues. The chemical changes from blue to yellow when gases are leaking into the coolant.

The oil is clean and no exhaust gases coming out the radiator (I got a sniffer).

  • Jonathan S
    Jonathan S Aug 04, 2010

The sniffer will definitely work as well.Would shoot some oil into cylinder number 3 with an oil can and recheck the compression. If compression increases you will know if piston rings are an issue if it doesn't then you will know that the low compression may be on the valve side of it.Do you have an inspection camera available to you?

  • Ricky Gittins
    Ricky Gittins Aug 04, 2010

I did a wet check with no change in compression #1

    or #3

    Jonathan S Aug 04, 2010

That is beginning to sound like a head gasket or head issue. You had previously suspected between 1 and 3 it just doesn't seem to be cracked where it is leaking into the coolant. You are almost to a point where you may have to do some tear down investigative work.

That's what it looks like, I'll pull the engine and save my back, Thanks for the help.

SOURCE: 95 GMC Jimmy 4.3l W vin rough idle

My problem was solved when I repaired my 4 wd activation dash switch. The switch was contacting on 2WD & 4HI at the same time. The front differential activation is vacuum activated possibly creating a tug of war that didn't actually engage it but drained off vacuum from the engine? A theory at best but stumbbled across it because I knew the switch wasn't working properly I repaired it and low and behold rough idle disappeared and all is good for 3 weeks running.

SOURCE: 2003 Silverado rough idle, idles good after "check engine" light

Check your o2 sensor voltage, those trucks are real bad for o2 sensors, and yes if one sensor is reading 0mv, the others will start to drop out, and the vehicle will run very, rough. You also may check fuel system pressure, should be almost 60p.s.i. If its alot lower, Id be looking into a fuel pump. If that vehicle is drive-by-wire (no throttle cable), the throttle bodies get very dirty and cause that concern also. Id start by having the vehicle scantested.

SOURCE: I have a 1.8 n13 sohc pulsar that will not start.

It might have a damaged valves caused by slipped timing belt making the piston and valves banged each other. That is why the compressions are low. Big job.

SOURCE: rough idle

Barring any mechanical issues you most likely have a failed injector.

a car that idles rough and clears up is the sure sign of an o2 sensor shorted this may not give a code if the short in the sensor is bad the computer will eliminate its input to protect itself

Why would a 2000 Stratus rough idle then die?

if now it won`t start it could be a spark(ignition)problem, check for spark at the plug. you should check for a code in the pcm this may help, not all codes set the check engine light. could also be a bad fuel pressure problem.

My 1991 Camaro rs 3.1 runs rough in gear but not at idle, and fuel pump runs the same without a fuel pump relay, I have 10-12 lbs of fuel pressure at intake-whether engine running at idle or just key on....

How did you measure the fuel pressure, and what is the factory specification for fuel pressure? You are correct, it should NOT run without a fuel pump relay. The fuel pump relay performs safety functions, such as shutting of the fuel pump in an accident that deploys an air bag.

My guess would be a valve timing problem. But I don't work on Chevrolet products, so I'm not sure if you have a timing chain or a timing belt. Do you have a distributor, or a coil pack in the vehicle? If a distributor, is the ignition timing correct? Watch out for vacuum leaks! And check to see that the PCV valve is closing, or you will lose lots of vacuum, making the engine run rough and nearly powerless at low speed.

Running rough and wants to die

Have the fuel pressure at the fuel rail checked. If you just want to throw parts at it: Fuel filter by the tank first. Fuel pressure regulator next. Order of ascending expense and likely hood. Does the fuel pump hum louder lately? The fuel pump may be on it's way out. It's not getting enough fuel to do anything but idle. Why that is takes some investigation. Somebody like Auto Zone may check your fuel pressure. If the fuel pressure is good, bad spark plug wires are the next guess. Lift the hood and run the engine in the dark (take the light bulb under the hood out if it still works to do this) If you see little lightening bolts traveling over the engine you need new plug wires. If the fuel pressure is good, the wires are good, change the spark plugs. Good Luck!

Runs rough

How long have you had this problem? It could just be a bad tank of gas. Other things to check:
1. fuel pump and filter
Could be running on only 5 cylinders due to
2. spark plugs/wires
3. plugged fuel injector
Any problems with electrical? Like lights dimming at same time as running rough?
4. could be bad alternator putting excessive load on engine.

Engine runs rough in gear.

Okay disconnect battery for 3 min to reset engine light to turn off! change wire #2 to #3, Swap them then start it. if misfire happens again if your fault codes goes from po302 to po303 then your ignition wires should be changed!!! if it is the same the that side of coil might be at your point of interest to change but I think spark wires might do it!!!! spark plugs should be the same time!!!! I think this will help??
