Question about 2004 Kia Sorento

2 Answers

My 2004 Kia Sorento AC quit blowing cold air and that's when i notice that my car was overheated! the Temp needle gauge marked well past the "H" , but i was on my way to work and wanted to park it somewhere familiar. As i turned into my job site, my Kia died and smoke vapors came out of the front hood. I opened and noticed ike clear "oil" in front area of the engine. I restarted and the needle went to middle section, but when i turn on AC i hear a "clunky" noise. My friend said i busted "water pump" and not to move it. Can anyone tell me how much and if that is what's wrong with my car before i call a mechanic and have them tell me something different and charge me "way" too much. I am a female and no nothing about cars. HELP!

It is very likely you have at the very least blown an engine cylinder head gasket, a very expensive little ride indeed.

Doing what you have done and not stopping immediately suggests that the cheapest repair will be a replacement engine
you cannot continue to drive an overheated engine and not expect total failure of the engine
to reduce the risk of getting ripped of , have it towed to an accredited service shop and get a quote

Van blows warm air then cold air temp needle starts to rise towards hot

There are many different temperature ranges of thermostats. The old one may have been a 165 degree thermostat. The new one may be a 195 degree one. You will then notice that the gauge will run higher than it used to.

It may just be the way the car works. I have a 2005 Altima and it does the same thing, but just doesn't blow really warm air. Try putting the air on recirculating, that may help a little. If it's still REALLY cold when you are stopped, I would check/replace the thermostat first. If you want to check the thermostat to see if it's working yourself, just remove it, and inspect it while it is cold, then put it in a pot of boiling water for 3 mins, inspect it, if the valve has opened it is okay, if it looks the same (aka valve was open to begin with) it may just be staying open and it should be replaced.

Does the car have a normal oil level on the dipstick? The behavior is consistent with a broken timing belt except for the part about the temperature gauge going to the top which would indicate overheating or a faulty gauge.

Check the relay. You can check it with a multi meter to see if the relay is opening and closing correctly. If the relay if good, check the temperature sensor. Hope this helped.
