Hi,

It would seem that you have are getting airlocks in the fuel system.

You have a air vent on the tank which is vented to the atmosphere, you will need to check that this is not blocked with dirt.

Also have your purge canister checked that there is enough ventilation going through this as it may be blocked in one of the ventilation hose's.

Hope this helps, let me know if you need more information.

Thanks

Jason

There are many possibilities:-- Not proper gas filled up.check purge solenoid valve.Gas filler cap breather blocked.Gas line vapor lock, bleed the gas and refill it. Your gas pump line that goes into your tank maybe clogged.Take it into the dealer to have that checked. Also, check with them for any recalls.as many others too are having this problem. Are you getting gas from the same station all the time? if so, there may be a problem with their in ground tanks or the pumps themselves. water is probably getting in the fuel. buy yourself a thing of octane boost(it'll clear out your whole fuel system) and go somewhere else for your gas from now on. If purge solenoid valve is out then pressure will not get build in the gas tank and this can be the cause of the problem. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

What would cause my Hyundai Santa Fe to start hard every time I put fuel in the tank? It doesn't mater if I just put a couple of gallons in or fill it up.

First sign of pump going bad when it is being filled fuel swirls the dirt around in the tank and when you go to start it it is hard. after the pump is running it runs fine til the next time.

Start problem after filling gas tank

Interesting,
is the check engine light on, and have you checked the computer for trouble codes ?
Sounds like the idle air control valve is sticking but that would not have any effect with the gas tank.

I have the same issue with my 2003 Sante Fe. After I fill up, (whether it's 1/2 a tank or 1/4), my car will stall unless I pump the gas for about 60 sec. My Sante Fe has around 104,000 miles- it also only gets 13 miles to the gallon. I also had an issue with the check engine light. I had 4 different garages check it and all 4 told me they didn't know why it was on (has beem on since 2005). I recently replaced the battery and it went off. Ever since I've had the problem filling up.

I have a hard time starting my 04 Santa Fe after i fill up

it was running then you removed the gas cap to fill ( extremely dangerous practice with car running)
that indicates that there is a problem with the EVAP system.
run the fault codes ( what the dealers should have done first ) and check for the EVAP codes , purge vent or solenoid problems

I have a hard time starting my 04 Santa Fe after i fill up

The most common cause of this is thermal shock (gasoline is very cold out of the ground) to the electric fuel pump inside the fuel tank, when the pumps get worn the decrease in temperature from the gasoline causes the pump to stick. This is a question I see fairly often, so I did research to see what the common cause is. Next time this happens have the fuel pressure checked.

Car won't start after filling up the gas tank.

Just helped a friend fix this exact same issue on his 2004 hyundai santa fe. Replaced the purge control valve - a $39 part, even from the dealer. Had to get our hands dirty, but it took literally one single hour to replace the part. Filled it up immediately afterward and no more starting problems. Part is located directly behind the manifold - top, rear of the engine compartment - just between the engine

I have a 2002 Hyundai Sante Fe. The check engine light has been on for months. No one can seem to find out why. Every time I fill up the gas tank I have a problem restarting the engine - I have to play with...

My educated guess is that the purge control valve is stuck in the open position. This valve is part of the emissions system on your Santa Fe and normally is closed when the engine is turned off. If the valve sticks open, fuel vapor gets pushed into the engine when filling the fuel tank. This creates a fuel mixture that is too rich on the next start up.
