Question about 1994 GMC Jimmy

Wont start... there is no power to the fuel pump when you first turn the key on but when you crank there is power. if you hit it with ether it will start and run. then starts every time. if you let it sit for a couple minutes it wont start again.

If this is the vortech motor i have seen where the fuel pump is not putting out enough pressure but will run when you hit it with ether so i whould change pump first.

It's definitely a fuel problem but not necessarily the pump. An old trick (but isn't perfect) to check the pump is to bang, gently, on the fuel tank while someone is cranking the engine. If the engine starts, it's the fuel pump, however, if it doesn't start, it doesn't prove anything. You'll have to check to see if power is going to the pump. Another thing to check is to make sure the injectors are pulsing by testing them with a noid light. If the injectors are not pulsing this indicates that there is a computer related problem and you might need to use a scanner. BTW, I wouldn't use ether for testing as this could cause a blown head gasket. We usually use spray carb cleaner, as this is not quite as powerful.

Is the fuel pump relay sending power to the pump, do you have normal fuel pressure at the injectors, and are the injectors getting power and pulse from the computer ?

If you ran the car empty it really only needs at least a gallon even on a hill it will start. Sometimes it takes 2-3 key cycles for full prime. If its still not starting you could have low fuel pressure , fuel pump could be faulty

Truck wont start but spray a little ether in it and it will run until the ether is gone. I unhooked the fuel line on the fire wall and it only had gas come out of it when I cranked the motor over. I think...


When the key is first turned before cranking, the fuel pump comes on for a few seconds to prime the fuel system and bring it up to pressure and then shuts off. When you crank the engine, the fuel injectors start to function causing the fuel pressure to drop. So that's why the fuel pump kicks on while the engine is cranking and it will remain on until the ECM sees that everything is in working order and then commands the fuel pump to remain on until the ignition is turned off. Is this a 4.3L Vortec Engine? If so, the (CRAB) injection assembly under the intake is faulty. It looks more like a spider than anything else. Be sure that you have adequate amount of fuel pressure because the (Crab Injection System) won't work at all. If it's an eight cylinder, may need to use a injector noid light. It's a special design light that plugs into the injector harness connector and lights up in pulses when engine is cranked. If there is no light, trace and check all wires leading from injector harness to ECU. Hope This Helps.

Had friend put OBD diagnostics to it and error code indicated fuel pump ????? No code indicates replacing any part . Indicates testing ! pressure and flow testing , voltage drop testing the electrical circuit etc... There is a check valve in the fuel pump assembly that is suppose to keep pressure in the fuel lines an fuel rail . When the check valve goes bad allows fuel to drain back into the tank. Try turn the key on an off a few times to build up pressure . The PCM energizes the fuel pump relay for two seconds at key on .

Well the car turns over n sounds like it wants to crank but it wont so i shot some ether into the throttle body n it still dont start so whats my next step to check

My cheve wont crank and start well it will crank but it wont turn over and run so i can drive it it just cranks and keeps on trying but it never goes threw can anyone help me it is a 98 Chevrolet s10...


Start out by spraying a small amount of starting ether down the air cleaner. If it cranks and runs for just a few seconds at least, you probably have a fuel problem. Turn the key to "On" and listen: Do you hear a whirring noise, the fuel pump kicking in? If you do, then you need to replace your fuel filter. If not, you may have to replace the fuel pump. If the engine does not start up after the ether, you might check the distributor, make sure all the wires are plugged in. If they are, The coil may have failed.

Engine cranks but wont start


Usually if no rpm signal, the vehicle won't start. Engine cranking, did you check for spark at the spark plugs? The fuel pressure you listed may have been the initial prime. It sounds like no injector pulse. The rpm signal comes from crank sensor. If your missing rpm signal, may thought is the crank sensor.
Were there any applicable trouble codes?

Truck would not start, gave it a blast of ether, it started


get your self a fuel pressure tester, hook it up to the fuel rail, you should get at least 30 psi with key on, 30 to 45 psi with engine running.

No power to fuel pump, relay is good, engine cranks over but won't start.


You need to follow a detailed troubleshooting procedure in a repair manual.
Check for spark plug fire during cranking after it dies.
No spark = ignition problem= computer will not fire injectors, and possibly cut out pump also.
Good spark = pump wonky, or power to pump system.
Also, other quick tests... when the thing dies, and then you crank,
1) Thump the fuel pump in the tank, if you can. A bad fuel pump might start up again.
2) Shoot some ether carb cleaner in the TB. If it only fires off the ether, the ignition system is no longer suspect.
