Question about 1992 Cadillac DeVille

1 Answer

Trying to remove the steering column from 95 cadillac sedan deville. I am at the point where the rubber boot is housing the final bolts and it is screwed on from the other side. What is the quickest way to remove the steering column from this point? Battery has already been taken out and steering wheel has been removed. What do I do from here?

Can't put key in the ignition

try moving your steering wheel back and forth while trying key. I don't see how you could move the steering column, its usually bolted in very tight. If you can move your steering column, it needs tightened up immediatly!

How do I take the steering column off a 1993 Cadillac DeVille

Pretty simple, and can be viewed vai various youtube vids, but for a quickie:
-disconnect battery neg cable.
-remove panel underneath steering column to dashboard.
-locate 4 or 6 main mounting bolts. Loosen them.
-remove steering coupler bolt at base of shaft slide coupler up
-disconnect electrical connectors
-remove main mounting bolts. let steering column rest on seat.
-gradually pull forward to remove, disconnecting any other plugs, etc.
-installation is reverse of removal.

The interior steering column is loose.

If it's like my 1990 Cadillac Deville, the steering wheel along with the air bag will have to be removed to gain access to at least 2 of 4 bolts that hold the steering column tight.

A technician can tighten 2 of the 4 bolts in order to make the steering column as tight as it should be. It's not necessary or possible to reach all 4, believe it or not.

That's the way GM steering columns are, I guess.

Ignition switch repair

The switch is on top of the steering column just behind the lower dash panel. Undo lower panel remove the steering column bolts upper and lower. Drop column and you will see it. The lock cylinder is a whole other story that will require special tools. Especially with a tilt and telescopic column.

Need to replace turn signal switch 93 cadillac deville

First do you have a sterring wheel puller. Can't remove the steering wheel without one. Quite an involved job including snaking the electrical connector end through the steering column. I wouldn't recommend it to the novice

Steering problem

What i can recall the only removable electronics is the complete turn signal assembly or the other would be the electronic piece that is actually the key reminder buzzer that reminds when key is left in ignition while engine is off...This looks like two flat copper match sticks attatched to a 1 inch piece of plastic... Well enough of my guesing.. if you were to go to an auto parts store and look at a motors repair manual for a chevy steering column little if anything has actually changed in the design with the tilt steering column which is probably why you originally took it apart because of the tilt torx bolts coming loose... I hope you used locktite when you reassembled to makesure it doesnt happen again....Good Luck
