Question about 1988 Jeep Wrangler

1 Answer

I am half way through the rebuilding process of my '88 Wrangler Laredo 4.2 L engine. The fellow helping me has taken a vacation just after we reinstalled the intake and exhaust manifold. I'm left holding any number of hoses, tubes, and wires, plus the reinstallation of various critical parts. I'm looking for a step-by-step guide on how to complete this project? What do I start with next? Is anybody there to help me?

Go to auto Zone or Any other Major auto parts store and get the Haynes or Chilton's repair manual on your vehicle. It will give you directions on how to reinstall your hoses and anything on the engine you haven't already put back on.

The ignition module is mounted next to the battery on all models. It is a sealed, weatherproof unit on the 4.2L engine. 1987-90 vehicles equipped with a 2.5L engine, incorporate the coil in the control module."

I have an 88 Cherokee with a straight 6 and it leaks oil from my breather what can I do to fix it

Check your pcv valve and make sure the vacuum line that goes to it is not plugged up.
If that's clear and the valve is good then likely you have excessive blow-by ...that is caused by ring and cylinder wall wear. On an engine that old, it's normal but unfortunate. In that case, the only real fix is an engine rebuild but you may be able to minimize how much comes out of there by adding a good viscosity improver like lucas additive. A new breather grommet or seal may also help contain a bit of what's leaking as well.

1988 jeep wrangler carb trouble

Ok... If you have any experience with carbs, you can get a rebuild kit. The most important part of any rebuild is to clean out obstructions in the passageways. Most times this can be done by using carb cleaner and spraying compressed air through them. Most times, just spraying cleaner into carb while installed is a waste of time as debris usually consists mainly of fine rust particles from inside the fuel tank, which will remain in the fuel bowl unless physically removed. If you can't do this, next best option is to search local junkyards for a similar unit. When replacing, cut the fuel line in a convenient place ahead of the carb inlet and put an aftermarket filter in the line, to prevent debris from re-entering and causing further problems. Most carbs have the adjustments blocked off. before using, it is wise to have someone who knows how to remove those plugs, do this for you so you can adjust it after installed.
Good luck

My 2002 jeep wrangler sport 4 cyl engine lite stays on dashboard,it does not affect performance.

Have you taken it to your mechanic to run the diagnostics... I had the same issue and it turned out to be a vapor lock issue that required a gas tank gasket replaced.
