Hi!!

If there is R12 in the system, you have to take the vehicle to an autorized A/C shop to have system evacuated, it may be wise to ask how much they will charge to do the conversion too.

If system is empty, need to check for leaks before starting.

At any AutoParts Store, they have conversion kits, also called retrofit kits that have everything you need to perform the conversion from R12 to R134a, instruccions included.

Just keep in mind that it may be cheaper to have this conversion made at a shop than do it yourself.

Good Luck

The least expensive way to do this is to purchase a conversion kit for your vehicle from One of the Major Auto Parts stores. You will also want to get a Haynes repair manual on your vehicle at the same time so you have a guide for some of the disassembly steps. These kits contain all the fittings and replacement parts that you will need and the initial charge that is needed as well. The conversion is going to take some time, it's more than just draining and replacing the freon and changing some fittings. In some kits you have to replace the dryer which is not always easy to get to. It can be done, just be prepared to do the job and start early in case you run into a problem. There are some kits that are somewhat cheaper but only provide fitting adapters and Freon. I do not recommend you use these kits as in most cases they reduce the cooling efficiency of your system. Good Luck.

its not worth very much as r134 is being used to replace r12 even if the system has r12 in it its being evacuated and replaced with r134.

R12

Most everything built before 1994 used R12 freon. And you must have a license to buy R12 in most countries.
A shop can convert the system over to R134.

Freon for 1990 oldsmobile 98

This car uses R12, it is no longer available, you must convert it to R134, this requires the compressor and reciever dryer be replaced and the system flushed out and the new PAG R134 refrigerant oil be added and new charging port kits installed. Is that car worth this effort?

How do you put freon on a 1985 Mazda RX7?

It had R12 when it was new. So if it has not been converted over to R134 you would need to have someone convert it.

What type of refrigerant does a 1990 Ford Ranger use?

there are only two types of refrigerant (or normally called as freon): R12 and R134. R12 is designed for car model 2000 and below. though, some old car compressors can accomodate R134 provided that you change your auxillary fan (fan for your aircon condenser) since R134 is hotter than R12. Ask an aircon technician if your compressor can be charged with R134.

Most of the countries now ban the use of R12 since it is more harmful to our ozone.

What type of freon the 85 Corvette uses

Cars of that decade use R12 I believe. I have a 1991 corvette that also used R12. I had it converted to R134 so I could do the recharge myself if necessary.

What kind of feon to use?

It came from the factory with R12 Freon but I suggest you have it converter over to R134 unless it has already been converted. R12 is almost impossible to acquire and if you do find it, then it is very, very, expensive. Look on the A/C unit and see if there is a label stating it has been converted. If not you need to have it converted over. Know that if it is low of refrigerant then you have a leak that needs to be repaired.

How much to recharge A/C unit in 92' Buick LeSabre?

Depends on if it takes R134 A or R12 refridgent. R134A most likley looking around $150 depending on amount of freon the system holds. if its R12 open your piggy bank cause its going to cost you some coin as R12 is no longer in production you have to convert your system to R134A or find a gararge that still has some R12

How do I recharge the AC freon on my own?

You should have R12 freon in a 1990 but you can put R134 freon into that system the only problem your going to have is the adapter for R12 is different from R134 after you get the adapter you need to put the freon in the low pressure valve not the high pressure, you will know which one because the adapter only fits the low pressure valve which is located on your AC lines under your hood, theres a little cap thats either blue or black you unscrew. You can't buy r12 anymore because its not good for enviorment so buy R134. you can buy at any parts store for like $5 to $10.

R12 to R134

You have to have the R12 completely evacuated. This is done at a repair facility that works on A/C. The only thing after that is screwing on 2 fittings to your existing lines and charge your system. Companies make retro-fit kits so the owner can do it themselves. These kits are available at most part stores.
