The gas gauge is part of the fuel pump assembly. I just replaced mine on 2X4 same truck. New assembly from GM is $500, $275 from Auto Zone. If inclined to do yourself, you can tilt bed up in drivers side. See other posts about changing fuel pump.

2001 GMC Sierra truck ext cab 4X4 - the fuel gauge will go to empty just after I fill the tank until it gets down to about 1/3 full

replace the fuel sender unit. I don't know why they go bad, but once you do, it should fix the problem.

I have a 2005 silverado 5.3 2wd ext cab. the engine loses power when there is a 1/4 tank of gas. when you put gas in the tank the power returns but not quite 100%. what to check?

Sounds like you may have a inaccurate fuel sending card in the tank where the gauge shows 1/4 tank but may be closer to empty. And when the tank is that low the pump screen could be sucking air but also accumalating debris that was floating in tank and partially blocking your fuel pump pickup screen.

2001 chevy silverado 4.8 gas gauge not working properly

Fairly common problem with GM vehicles. The sending unit in your tank has a small circuit board that an arm is attached to which moves up and down according to your fuel level. This circuit board and arm are not making good contact. Unfortunately the only good solution is to replace this part.

Faulty gas gauge

Have a 2001 chev and it does the same thing. It is a common problem. It is a faulty in tank sender, not the fuel pump. You can just replace the sending unit by removing tank. If you want more information please get back to me.

Fuel sensor gauge

you will need to replace the fuel level sensor.(sending unit) it is in the tank and is hooked to the fuel pump. you can buy seperatly from pump. you may finf it easier to remove the bed if you have some help. it is six or eight bolts and harness unplugs then you can get right to it.
