Hi normally nothing, but in some cases it will rev high and low, but that's about it, it really shouldn't have any affect on the running, you will get an engine management light up on the dash as well telling you there is a fault, but it should run normally...hope this helps

I n my 04 Jeep Cherokee I replaced the bank1sensor1. But now I'm getting code P0442. That's an evap leak. Would my sensor i replaced with a Mopar sensor cause that to code?Did I buy the wrong sensor?


code p 0442 refers to the EVAP system--small leak detected or large leak detected === causes --hose connections , --intake leak---EVAP canister---EVAP purge valve ---mechanical fault ( cap loose or not fitted properly)hose connections ---EVAP pressure sensor
I cannot see any connection between what you did and the fault code---

My jeep is acting like it's choking and sputtering.


O2 sensors will not cause this symptom. Have the fuel pressure tested with a special test gauge and also clean the inside of the Mass Airflow sensor with the special spray they make and change out the air filter to the engine if it is dirty.

Symptons o2 sensors


If your O2 sensors are malfunctioning, the main symptom would be that the Check Engine light will come on. On some vehicles, an O2 sensor circuit shorted to ground can cause a no-start problem.
If the "Check Engine" or "Service Engine Soon" light is on and there is a code for the O2 sensors, I would like to also advise you that many O2 sensor codes are not caused by the O2 sensors themselves. In many cases, the O2 sensors are only REPORTING the problem. for example, a code P0171 "Oxygen Sensor Lean" code is rarely ever caused by the O2 sensor. It is usually caused by a vacuum leak or a failed Mass Airflow sensor (MAF) or Manifold Absolute Pressure sensor (MAP) or a bad fuel injector. In these cases, repairing the real reason that the engine is running lean will fix the O2 Sensor code without replacing the O2 sensor.

P0138 - O2 Oxygen Sensor Circuit High Voltage (Bank1, Sensor2)

The Heated Oxygen Sensor (2) located rear of catalytic converter produces an output signal relative to oxygen storage capacity of catalytic converter. Ho2S 2 signal is less active than signal produced by front oxygen sensor. This code sets when HO2 Sensor voltage is greater than 999 mV for more than 2 minutes (time depends on model. Could be as high as 4 minutes)


Symptoms: There may be no noticeable symptoms except for MIL illumination. Possible high fuel pressure can over rich the system.


Causes: A code P0138 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Faulty O2 sensor
* Short to battery voltage in O2 sensor signal circuit
* High fuel pressure (not as likely)


Here are some potential solutions:
* Replace O2 sensor
* Repair short to battery voltage in o2 sensor signal circuit

What is the signs that a o2 sensor is going out?


If you have an engine code stored pertaining to the O2 sensors. Also if the vehicle is running real rich or real lean, maybe a sign of a bad O2 sensor.

The OBD is not that simple.

All it is saying is that it does not like the air/fuel mixture.
That can be from fouled spark plugs, an open gas cap or other intake leak, a bad O2 sensor, PVC foam on the air mass sensor, throttle position sensor, etc.
It is just like any carb engine when the mixture is bad.
You can't just read a number and know what to replace.
You have to have a feel for the symptoms.
And if there are no other symptoms, it could be the code is simply the only thing wrong.

Personally my best guess would the air mass sensor.
Look the inside of the oil cap. If there is foam there, then there is likely foam in the air mass sensor as well. PVC systems always throw foam into the sensor, and the only solution is to splice longer hoses into the system and into a condenser of some sort. This is worse in northern climates, in the winter. Most cars in cold conditions have this happening all the time. But as long as the light goes off eventually, don't worry about it.

P0137 - Oxygen O2 Sensor Circuit Low Voltage (Bank 1, Sensor 2)

Essentially the same as P0136, P0137 refers to the second oxygen sensor on Bank 1. P0137 means the O2 oxygen sensor's voltage remained low for longer than 2 minutes. This, is interpreted by the ECM as a low voltage condition and sets the MIL. Bank 1 Sensor 2 is located to the rear of the catalytic converter and should produce an output signal relative to oxygen storage capacity of the catalytic converter. This rear (sensor 2) sensor is less active than the signal produced by the front sensor. However, if the ECM senses the sensor is inactive, this code will set.

Symptoms: There may be no visible symptoms to the driver, other than the MIL (Check Engine / Service Engine Soon) illumination.

Causes: A code P0137 may mean that one or more of the following has happened:
* Faulty o2 sensor Exhaust leak near the rear sensor
* Plugged catalyst
* Short to voltage on O2 signal circuit
* High resistance or open on O2 signal circuit

Possible Solutions:
* Replace faulty sensor
* Repair exhaust leak near the rear sensor
* Check for restriction in catalyst and replace as necessary
* Repair short, open, or high resistance on o2 signal circuit

That's a generic O2 sensor circuit overvoltage warning. Did they find any additional codes? Also, did they clear the code for you? Your car is an OBD2-emissions car, meaning you'll have an O2 sensor before and after each catalytic converter. Is your engine the V8 or the inline 6? If it's the V8, you'll probably have four (although it could be two or three) O2 sensors. If it's the inline 6, you likely only have two. I'm asking about additional codes because that one doesn't help narrow down which sensor is bad. Have you noticed your gas mileage dropping at all? Or a buildup of black carbon soot in the tailpipes? Maybe less power than usual? If so, it's probably a primary (pre-cat) O2 sensor. Those are the ones that determine how much fuel the engine will be fed. If you don't have any discernable difference at all, it's probably a secondary sensor (post-cat). The issue I have is, either of those should throw at least one additional code (either to indicate which sensor is going bad, or in the case of a secondary sensor, you'll usually see a "catalytic converter below threshold" or similar code, since the secondary sensors are used by the computer to see how well the cats are working).

Any additional codes in there, or symptoms you can describe?

Oxygen sensor


O2 voltage should vary between about .10 volts and 1.0 volts with the engine in closed loop mode. low volts mean lean, high, rich, if the voltage is always low (<.20V) even when you goose the throttle chances are the O2 is done. Remember high/low voltage readings indicate lean rich conditions, a failed O2 has almost no drive symptom, just a check engine light.
