Question about Dodge Ram 2500

1 Answer

I am looking at a 2001 Dodge 3/4 ton 4 wheel drive pick up with and automatic trans. The truck has about 106,000 miles. When I pulled the transmission fluid stick to look at the atf it looked sort of a brownish red but did not smell burnt. The truck looked like it had been used offroad allot of its life, but I am concerned about the transmission. Is the color of the fluid indicate a major problem coming?

Hi no this is the normal colour of the fluid, it should be a reddish brown colour, auto transmission fluid is red to start with and once it has been worked it does go that colour, so long as it changes gears ok then you should be fine, if you are worried about it, its a simple drain job and fill, just a tip for you, when or if you do drain it and fill, make sure the motor is running when you check the fluid level in the box, as allot of people just fill it when switched off, and it starts slipping as they haven't put enough fluid in...hope this helps

Will a transmission out of a dodge 3/4 ton with a v10 fit in a 1995 of the same?

yes they both use a 48re trans. so does the diesel. a 5.9gas and 5.2 uses a 47re. all dodge v10s and 5.9 diesels in all years 2 wheel and 4 x4 use a 48re. some models don't have the overdrive portion on the back of trans but you can put it on one that doesn't and you can add or remove a transfer case to any of them. you can even use a 47 re it just has weaker bands and cluches

Recommended oil change mileage

You can more or less pick your number depending on how you use the truck.
Oil change shops will tell you 3,000 miles or 3 months, the general rule today is 5,000 miles or 6 months, and your owners manual probably says something else.
It should be changed at least once a year if you don't drive it much, or more than every 5,000 miles if you drive it hard or use it for towing or city driving.

Hi i have a 2001 mitsibishi eclipse i want to tow it using tow bar which means 4 wells will being siting on the pavement, someone tell me the transmition can be damage, its this true?

Ok, a couple of things, if it is all wheel drive, automatic or manual, do not tow it like this. Check the owner's manual. If it is automatic two wheel drive, do not tow it like that. Manual trans, two wheel drive should be fine. Like I said consult your owner's manual. Take care and good luck.

Grinding in and out of 4 wheel drive

You say 'new' truck, 09? or new used? I have had 3 Fords, 3 w/ manual trans. case, if you go into 4x4 Low range, you must come to a complete stop before shifting the trans. case to 4x4 mode, and I always put trans (automatic) in neutral before slipping into 4x4, it engages smoothly, no grinding. 4x4 high range can be put in while moving, but I would let off the gas pedal, shift to 4x4 high range, then resume accelerating. If there is any grinding going on doing it as above, something isn't right. Check the trans. case fluid level also, to make sure that's not an issue.

1990 subaru legacy 4x4 problems

This transmission has a 4 wheel drive unit on the back of the trans this has a known fault which this unit could have, take to your local trans specialist and he will be able to verify and qoute, You also could check the fuse for the 4 wheel drive. normally in the fuse box under the bonnet marked 4wd or awd, this also would cause your fault.
