Question about 2000 Volkswagen Beetle

Serpentine belt cutting radiator hose? is that possible? it was just replaced a little over a year ago (the belt).

No, it's not even near any hose to be victimized. All radiator coolant ports are located at the drivers side of the vehicle.

Reasons for car temperture to run hotter


A vehicle generally runs hot if low on coolant, that is the first thing to check. If coolant levels are ok, make sure your serpentine belt is tight and not squealing. If loose replace the belt tensioner and belt. Third the thermostat may be sticking and needs to be replace, usually located below the top radiator hose where it joins the intake manifold. You give little information on how hot, so it may just be the cooling systems needs flushing and the coolant replaced.

How do I replace the radiator on a 2001 Chevrolet Monte Carlo


1. Empty the radiator
2. disconnect top and lower hoses on the radiator.
3. remove plastic cowling, (should be an upper and lower half with two bolts on each side. There may be an upper plastic cowling as well that will have to be removed.
4. sometimes you can work around the fan, if not remove the fan belt and fan. Make a drawing of how the serpentine belt goes on if it has a serpentine belt. There should be a tension wheel on the belt used for removal and installation of the belt. Be very carefull of your fingers when removing and installing the belt.
5. Remove the four or six bolts that hold the radiator on and lift the radiator out. It may be easier with two people to lift the radiator out.
GOOD LUCK, IT'S NOT A VERY HARD JOB AND ONCE YOU'VE DONE IT ONCE IT GOES PRETTY FAST.

Antifreeze leak


The hoses could seem ok but have tiny cracks in them that you can't see if they were not replaced. With antifreeze the flange the hose goes on could be rusting from antifreeze and cutting the hose. Cut the end of the hose past the clamp mark if there is enough slack. and put back on. The clamp could either be too tight and cutting the hose on the metal flange or not tight enough. Squeeze the hose and if you see cracking in the hose replace it. Also, if you over fill it it could be a problem or you got a bad radiator. If it is a tiny leak in the radiator you can use radiator stop leak. http://picsbox.biz/key/radiator%20leak%20sealant. Serpentine belt tensioner pull


Belts only drive the water pump and other accessories and do not cause overheating. Have a pressure test done on the cooling system. Have a compression test done to check for head gasket or cracked head. Have a flow test done to check for blocked cores in radiator .check external fins of radiator to see if they are flaking off. Flushing radiators doesn't work because once the cores are blocked up there is no way to un block them. If you have a viscous fan hub have it check out as they stop driving after a period of time.

Coolant temperature fluctuates


What you are describing is a cooling system low on coolant or a sticking thermostat.
I might leave the thermostat out and drive it a few days to see what happens. There could be something in the system that is restricting flow, or it could still be low on coolant.
Its possible something is not right with air flow thru the radiator or the fan clutch. There could be a restriction in the ac condenser.

Which way does the waterpump turn on a 1985 Ford LTD 302?


The feature than can determine the way the pump turns would be whether they were driven by the smooth side of a serpentine belt on the one had, vs. the grooved side of a serpentine belt or a V belt on the other hand.

It would really be a good idea to get a numeric reading on the engine temperature...

Of course, the number one issue is the thermostat. If it is too high of a range, or is not opening properly, the 4-core radiator will never be called on.

Next is the possibility that steam/vapor is collecting around the t-stat. I had a big problem with that in an Aries K. Once it got hot enough to open the t-stat a few times the temperature settled down.

If the fan is not doing its job sufficiently you will get overheating at stop lights and in crawling traffic, but cooling that is fine above maybe 15 or 20 MPH.

If the bottom radiator hose has failed, it can collapse due to the suction of the water pump. For the whole length of that hose you should not be able to flatten the hose by hand. It should have a spiral of wire, a "spring," inside it that prevents that. If that wire has corroded, and isn't doing its job you can get compromised flow.

When the engine is cold, start it up. Before long, the heater hose that comes out neat the t-stat should start to warm up, while the upper radiator hose stays cold. The closed t-stat forces circulation through the heater system. This causes flow over the hot surfaces, and carries the heat from the area of the cylinders to the area of the t-stat. without that, the water's heat would take 10's of minuted to get to the t-stat.

Next, when the heater hoses get too hot to touch comfortably, but before the engine overheats, the upper radiator hose should start to warm up. The t-stat will start to open, and a little hot water will sneak out of the engine, heating the hose a little. That will introduce a little cold water from the radiator into the water pump, where it will get quickly mixed with the water circulating through the heater system, closing the t-stat pretty quickly. So the initial warming of the upper radiator hose will be pretty slow.

If it overheats before the upper hose gets too hot to touch, you have a t-stat problem. Either the t-stat is failing to do its job, or it is not getting the heat signal it needs to operate properly.

If the heater system is clogged or plumbed wrong, it will not allow the requisite circulation.

I hope this gets you on the road to fixing your overheating problem. A 302 with a mondo radiator as you describe should have no overheating troubles, even in the desert!

Car overheats a little just a little pass half wats the problem


Could be a couple of things...cheapest first okay?

1. Low coolant level

2. Thermostat is starting to fail

3. Radiator fins are extremely dirt (wash off with hose!)

4. Fan belt/Serpentine belt is wearing out on underside (starting to slip)

5. Water pump is starting to go bad

6. Need to flush the coolant system.

Our 1997 Mazda Protege keeps breaking serpentine belts, gauls them up


Remove the belt and make sure all of the accesories spin freely. All should spin freely except the crank shaft which is the lowest pully. If they all spin freely then I would say it is most likely the tensioner itself and they should be replaced on high mileage vehicles anyway.
