Question about 2004 Pontiac Aztek

1 Answer

I have a 2004 Pontiac Aztek and one night my key got stuck in the ignition. My dad took it to a local mechanic and he said it was a blown fuse. Well he changed the fuse and that worked for awhile but about a week later the key got stuck again and the car wouldn't turn on. So we took it back to the same guy and he changed some ignition cylinder. Well a few days later the key got stuck again and we just keep changing the ignition fuse and the key will come out but I don't want to have to keep changing fuses. Can anyone else help me out cause the guy I keep taking it too is not solving the problem and I can't afford to keep getting my car fixed.

Lots of owners have a problem with this. I have found several answers for people to try before going to the dealer and getting the answer I got which was," It's all gunked up under there- it'l be $768- can't really tell ya what it is."
Most popular answer #1 There is a small plug under the steering colloum, remove it, slide a small screwdriver up the hole to hit a button that will allow you to finish turning the key and pull it out. #2 Raise and lower the steering wheel all the way up and down a couple of times stopping at the lowest position- sometimes the key will turn and remove. #3 There have been reports of the huge wiring harness assembly located under the drivers side seat has either gotten wet/damp/wire loosened by backseat passengers foot/or a wire under the drivers side carpet leading to the harness is broken from being stepped on. #4 Check the fuses under the dash on drivers side #s 40, 42, 44 There has also been a recall on certain serial #s to replace the lock cylinder. And one report of an owner removing the prawl located on the colloum by the key cylinder. as always caution must be used when ever you open up a job. Extra caution here due to working in the area of the airbag- AFTER trying all the above, it is time to either live with it,(I can leave the key in the on position for an hour and a half), Come back an hour later and simply finish turning the key to the full off position- it will then remove, OR when you park it at nite, put it on a trickle charge. OR take it to the dealer who will attempt to replace the most expensive part first, then work his way down in the parts list until he finds something that works.

Cluster is pretty much non serviceable. It's a circuit board problem that will have to be fixed by a cluster repair shop.

Check your fuse box.
May be an easy fix. Fuse may be blown.
The manual will show the location.

Sounds like the cluster is not getting power, either from the key switch or because of a blown fuse.
I would check the fuses first.

Hi. Every car this days have immobilizer and key or phobe coded to it. If you replaced key but didnt switch guts to new same case you won't start up the car and you will have security codes pop. Usually service does such things. I don't think you guys can do it without equipment.

Pontiac aztek will not go into the ignition

Have you tried Lock ease or some other Lock Cylinder Lubricant? Even motor Oil usually will work but you will have to wipe off the Key several times. I have a 2002 Aztek and lubricate all the locks annually. I have had your problem only once and Oil did the trick. The only other thing I can think of is the possibility of someone putting a foreign object into the Lock such as a small piece of wire or Paper Clip. It could also have a worn out lock cylinder where the tumbler springs have popped out due to lack of lubrication and wear. Let me know!

I just push a pencil or pen through a hole located under the ignition on the steering column. There's no cap... but I have a 2001 Aztek.

while in park, press harder up past park and it will disengage. Otherwise there is a pin on the ignition you can press and remove the entire ignition. You call also lightly tap gently around igniton piece to loose the pins inside that hold the key.
