Would you swap out a several hundred dollar part on someones recommendation sight unseen and then spend several hours replacing the part not knowing the whole time if this was the correct cure. Thats what your asking here because my first thought would be faulty fuel pump Any part will cost you over $100 bucks so why not address this professionally. Have it diagnosed correctly.

I have a 96 ford explorer, will start and idle fine , sometimes it will accelerate fine then I will loose RPM/speed and have to pull off road sputter out til it dies. press gas to raise rpm nothing

Try the fuel filter. If that is not a problem then the other thing I would suggest is to check the fuel pump. If the pressure is being lost in the fuel pump then your car will lose it's acceleration.

1990 chevy silverado 1500 wont run

Code 12 means you are in test mode, code 34 is a problem with the map sensor, and code 35 is a problem with the idle control valve.
But those two codes could show up if you disconnect those sensors or if the engine is having other problems.
In situations where the engine stalls, it is very easy to overlook something or assume a component is working.
Treat it like a no start. Pull a plug wire and watch the spark as the engine dies. Use carb cleaner or starting fluid to boost fuel supply.
You'll have to figure out if it is loosing spark or fuel to proceed.
Things like the coil, the stator in the bottom of the dist, or a relay can be the cause. Even low fuel pressure.

My 1998 Volkswagen Beetle keeps dying.

With the car running rough it could cause the harsh shift but if it is staying at 5000 rpms then the ****** is about to go out on you. The rough idle sounds like a vacuum leak. If you can keep the car running at idle listen for a sucking type sound. That would indicate where the vacuum leak is.

I would start with washing the throttle air intake out ,it looks like you are trying same as most of us some times we over look the simple things, have you checked the air filter? intermittent are ruff to find does it happen like on rainy day or high moisture, have you had it scanned ?it could also be catalytic converter,i have seen them lose and part in side they are expensive, listen 4 a rattle when U give it a jar, again to save$ i would start with a scan

Sputters then dies

Most likely a lack of fuel, check the fuel filter first.
