Question about 1997 Volkswagen Jetta

1 Answer

My mechanic just replaced my rear brakes along with my front passenger side wheel bearing. Ever since, my brake lights come on when I turn on the headlights. A cop pulled me over last night and said I need get that fixed or I could get a ticket. I don't want to take it back to this mechanic and was wondering if it was an easy fix.

I have a 83 Bronco 351w I am doing the brakes and the passenger side rotor needs to be replaced can someone walk me through this thanks

Personally I would replace both rotors to prevent a future brake imbalance.

* chock rear wheels, raise front of vehicle and place on stands.

* remove wheels, remove brake calliper and bracket assemblies.

* remove bearing hubs from axles, via removal of bearing adjustment nut

*remove hub seals, clean and inspect bearings, repack with HT bearing grease.

* the brake rotor bolts to the rear of the hub, you will have to remove and replace rotor to hubs, make sure all bolts are thread locked with loctite 263 and tensioned to spec.

* pack hub with grease, install seals, fitt hub assembly and adjust wheel bearing preload, install new split pins.

* fitt brake calliper and brackets, fit new brake pads,

* fitt wheels lower vehicle, test brake for function

Hope this helps..

Noise on the rear right wheel

Rear wheel hub bearing-do both sides

Two mechanics.really

Better start doing you own work

Did they even drive the car & were you along ?

Have to do that or you won't likely find anything

2001 Cavalier passenger rear brake locks up at slow speeds, shakes at higher speeds, mechanics changed drums 3 times, keeps coming back

I think it is time to find an accredited brake specialist . At the best with a hub it may be bad wheel bearings but I consider it a problem with the mechanics and their lack of commitment to fixing your problem

Back Tire on 1997 Nissan Quest xe is smoking from rear tire and smells like rubber burning.

Sounds like you have a brake or wheel bearing seized on that vehicle, best to let it completely cool off before attempting anything.
jack rear tire and support with jack stand, try turning the tire by hand once its off the ground, if it turns or doesn't turn either way you must pull the wheel and determine what the cause is or was for all that smoke and smell.
Pull the brake drum and check the wheel cylinder for leaks and if it is frozen holding the rear brake locked on that side if it is replace the brakes both rears and wheel cylinders both rears and the appropriate brake drums if they are worn out and heat cracked.
If the brakes appear to be hanging due to the emergency brake hanging up, spray the emergency cables, try to adjust the cables after you replace the brakes, bleed and adjust the system and walla you are safe and sound.
If you have a frozen wheel bearing you must remove the frozen bearing off the rear spindle stub shaft, either bty heat or impact chisel, check spindle for signs of wear if ok just lightly sand with 180 wet/dry paper, pull out the bearing and punch out the inner outer races along with the inner grease seal and replace all five items, repack the bearings and hub with a high temp resistant wheel bearing grease, re install the brake drum re install the hub nut and cotter pin to a proper torque and walla... Happy Motoring!!

Grinding noise passenger side front

Check wheel bearing.
Check backing brake plate , sometimes it's bended and touching brake rotor.
If wheel bearing is bad , you may have same effect with backing plate , brake rotor touch backing plate.

Scraping grinding noise in front passenger side wheel. Could it be a replacable wheel bearing?

When both a scraping and grinding noise is heard from a wheel, it typically indicates a problem with the brakes, not the bearings. If when the brakes are applied, the noise changes, it does indicate a possible brake issue. I would first check the brakes and then take a close look at the bearings, as they can still cause the grinding noise, but not typically the scraping noise. Hope this is helpful.
