Question about 1996 Ford Contour

1 Answer

No Brake Lights on 1996 Ford Contour due to Combo Switch Failure.

I'm on my third combo(turn signal) switch @$90.00 a pop. This problem started after a brake-in through the right front passenger window and now that power door lock operates much slower than the other three. I'ts too my knowledge that the power source for the door locks also power the brake lights. I have already had the Contour in to a reputable auto electric shop and they diagnosed ''no power coming through the combo switch from the brake light switch on the pedal''. I told them the story of the brake-in, but they could not find anything else wrong and suggested a new switch. I bought one from Ford,,Installed it,,,but it only lasted about a couple of weeks. Who knows when it stopped working???only until I noticed no brake lights in reflection on the ground behind the car in my rear view mirror. The bulbs are good, it's not blowing any fuses or links,,,just the combo switch is being taken out!

Yes, the switch cancels the brake lights when the turn signal is used.

No rear brake lights

If you have power thru the brake light switch, the next component to test is the turn signal switch. If the regular brake lights and turn signals are on the same circuit they both go thru the turn signal switch.

No brake lights on a 1996 ford contour ..3rd light and blinkers work fine I have ohm'd out brake switch on pedal and it is good ..blinkers on front and back both work.. no power to bulb socket on brown to...

The brake lights (excluding the 3rd brake light) go through the turn signal switch. It's possible there's a bad connection in the switch causing your symptoms. I would rule out the brake switch on the pedal, considering the third brake light works. Locate a wiring diagram for the brake light circuit, follow the wires into the steering column as far as you can and verify it's getting power up until the turn signal switch and verify no power is coming out of it. Once that's determined it's time to replace the switch.

Turn signals flash sometimes other times they just light up

replace flasher, or switch with emergency flasher to test.. Should be in with fuses or in that area.

If there is no fuse that is blown, then according to wiring diagrams on repair info link it must be the combination switch:

My mother's brake lights (1996 Ford Contour) were not working and it was the combination switch. The combination switch is an assembly by the wheel, you use it to give turn signals, high beam, hazard lights and apparently the 'smart' Ford designers linked the rear brake lights to it. Could be a contact that is oxidized. I repaired mine. I may have one lying around. You can get this from a junk yard. I believe it is pretty simple to remove.
