Question about Nissan Murano

I have power but when turning on the ignition, all I get is a clicking sound. Could this be the battery or the starter solenoid?

1999 Subaru Forester starting problem


You either don't have power to solenoid or solenoid is bad. Disconnect solenoid power from ignition and check for power there using a light or a multimeter. Connect battery to the starting terminal and to ground. Turn ignition on go to start position. Light should ncome on. If not checl that circuit backwatds. If on then jump solenoid with a wire from battery positive. If OK it should click and start. If not check starter brushes and solenoid.

Rapid clicking noise when trying to start the engine?


Hi There,

You turn the key to start your engine and....
a series of rapid clicks. Your car won't start. What's going on?

That clicking noise is your starter solenoid.

Your starter needs a lot of power to turn your engine. That much power would melt your ignition switch in no time if it passed directly through it. So what happens instead is your ignition switch actuates another electric switch called a solenoid. The solenoid is a really HEAVY DUTY switch.

Inside it are two copper contacts that look like the head of a bolt only rounded. The battery is attached to one, the starter to the other. Hovering above them on a spring is a copper clad disk attached to an iron core. The iron core is inside an electro-magnet.

When you turn your key (in a perfect world), an electromagnet is activated that yanks the disk towards the contacts (Making a single decisive healthy CLICK). When they connect, the circuit is closed and the starter turns over. OK.

When things go wrong:

Low Battery:
  • The solenoid requires power to actuate.
  • The starter takes a lot more power to turn the engine.
  • When the battery is low, there isn't enough power to do both.
  • You turn the key, solenoid engages (CLICK)
  • Power goes to the starter
  • The starter tries to turn the engine
  • The draw from the starter drops the available power below the minimum needed to keep the solenoid engaged.
  • The solenoid disengages
  • The starter is no longer drawing power
  • The additional power allows the solenoid to re-engage (Click)
  • Repeat the process for as long as you have the key turned. (CLICKCLICKCLICKCLICK)
That's where those clicks are coming from and why.

The remedy:
Short term - Jump start
Long term - Charge or replace battery.


I wanted to explain what was happening rather than just saying 'dead battery, replace it'. That way you can judge for yourself whats going on.

many things will cause no start problems could have faulty ignition switch.use test light see if power going to starter if not check ignition fuse to starter.if power going to starter, more likely starter solenoid or starter faulty.if ignition fuse okay and starter and solenoid okay still no start problem could be in the ignition switch or inhibitor switch faulty.code scan for faulty theft security system which will also cause no start conditions.

If it won't crank over, it's a problem in the starting circuit, not the ignition circuit. Check your battery and starter for clean, tight connections. Listen for that click to see if it comes from the starter solenoid on the starter-maybe have someone try to start it while you watch and listen under the hood. If the click is from the solenoid (and not from the starter relay), then the starter is not getting full battery power to crank (bad connection), or the starter needs to come off and be tested.
If the click is from the starter relay, you could pull off the little purple wire to the starter solenoid and see if it has 12 volts when the key is in start position. If you have power there in cranking position on the switch, the solenoid is bad or the starter may be the problem-again, it will have to come off for testing. If you have no power at the solenoid in cranking position, the circuit from the ignition switch to the solenoid is not working. The start relay and the neutral safety switch (or clutch switch if manual transmission) are in the starting circuit from ignition switch to the starter solenoid. Good luck.

if it just clicks when turning to start. if battery is ok. it is the starter solinoid on starter, that heats up then it will not start till it gets cool again. but if you can get a starter at a reasonable cost. go for it. good-day ! The symptom of a bad solenoid includes a rapid clicking sound indicating it is receiving too little power from the car battery. This lack of power may be from a low battery or corrosion of the battery cables causing the engine to not start. Corrosion is also possible in the internal solenoid connections, or a blocked plunger may lead to the solenoid being flooded with power and burning out the internal connections to damage the unit. Clicking on attempted ignition should be a warning to have the starter system checked. It can easily be located on any vehicle by following the path of the positive red cable from the battery to its direct connection to the solenoid. if you engage the ignition switch and the engine does not turn but instead emits a repetitive clicking sound, your solenoid is stuck open or closed and will need to be replaced.

Assuming your battery is properly charged and has a good connection, it's your starter solenoid (relay) that has failed.

The starter solenoid receives a large electric current from the car battery and a small electric current from the ignition switch. When the ignition switch is turned on, a small electric current is sent to the starter solenoid. This causes the starter solenoid to close a pair of heavy contacts, thus relaying a large electric current to the starter motor, which in turn sets the engine in motion.

If a starter solenoid receives insufficient power from the battery, it will fail to start the motor, and may produce a rapid clicking or clacking sound. The lack of power can be caused by a low or dead battery, by corroded or loose connections in the battery cable, or by a damaged positive (red) cable from the battery. Any of these problems will result in some, but not enough, power being sent to the solenoid, which means that the solenoid will simply make a clicking sound, rather than setting the starter motor in motion.

If these items are all okay, it is likely you need to replace the solenoid.

If you are getting a clicking sound, then the starter is not getting enough power. There are three major things that must work in order for a starter to work. A good power source with good connections, a good starter solenoid (puts direct battery power to the starter motor when you turn the ignition to start), and a good starter motor. Usually a clicking sound indicates a fault in the first two items mentioned. If it were a blown fuse, you would get absolutely nothing when you turned the ignition key.

Does not start, god battery, and starter, no power going starter


Most likely bad cell on battery with not enough amerage or the solenoid on the starter is going bad. Turn car to on and Jumper the solenoid if it starts replace starter as that part is hard to get on its own.
