Either the master cylinder brake lines or hoses are defective.
Start at the master and see where fluid stops circulating.
Probably in the rubber hoses going to caliper.

    If there is a substantial fluid eruption, there are air bubbles still trapped in the system. You must repeat the bleeding procedure to remove that air. A modest disturbance in the fluid returning to the reservoir indicates a properly bled brakesystem.

I have 04 awd saturn vue my front driver and rear passenger brakes won't engage or something.


Make sure the master cylinder is full and that the vacuum line going to it is is secure wit no air leaks. If as you state the brakes not being applied only at the drivers front and passengers rear wheels, but the other two wheels are working fine you will either have a leaking/blocked master cylinder, leaking/blocked brake lines feeding each of those wheels, or a bad proportioning valve. To trouble shoot raise the bad wheel and crack open the bleeder valve, have an assistant apply the brakes if a nice clean steady stream of fluid comes out, MC is OK, and valve is OK, any bubbles of poor flow indicates leak in system. Very little flow bad MC or blocked lines/valve, etc.Do the same for the rear wheel and you should be able to determine the fault.

Hi Chris, The brake system is basically very simple. If you have duel braking on your vehicle, the usual method is having two brakes operate on the front with for example the left rear and the other system will also operate two front and the right rear. This type of system will have two calipers on each of the front wheels. The tandem system works in a slightly different way, having the forward part of the cylinder pressurizing the rear brakes and the rear part of the cylinder pressurizing the front. I think under the circumstances you are describing, I would have a friend sit inside and pump the brakes repeatedly until the system becomes pressurized (maybe twenty thirty times of pumping the brake pedal) and then ask him or her to keep it pushed firmly down until you find out where its leaking. The amount of brake fluid you report having been sed would indecate a severe leakage. Check the lower parts of the rear wheels for signs of leaking wheel cylinders and then dito for the front wheels. Any signs of wetness at these areas and along the brake system (the plumbing or pipe work) will indicate where the leakage is. If you cannot identify a wheel which is leaking, carefully inspect around and blow the master cylinder and if this no sign go along the fluid lines, taking special note of where the damaged pipe was repaired. If there is a blockage in the line, air may be trapped at that point causing difficulty in pressurizing. Once the place of leakage has been identified it must be attended to before bleeding the system. When bleeding, begin with the wheel furthest from the master cylinder, and work your way back to the master cylinder one wheel at a time, until you reach the closest.Keep in mind that you may find it required to pump the pedal many many times before opening the bleed nipple.Regards John

How to bleed the brakes of a 2002 astro


Start from the farthest wheel from the master cylinder. Passenger rear, then the driver rear, passenger front, and then the driver front. Complete all repairs, fill the master cylinder, and find a friend to pump the brake for you. Have them pump the brakes 8 to 10 times and hold the brake on, while they hold the brake on open the bleeder, fluid and air will come out and the pedal will go to the floor. Have them push it to the floor and hold it there, then have them say floor. When they say floor close the bleeder before they release the pedal. repeat this process at each wheel until you get fluid without air in it at each wheel. Make sure you check the fluid level in the master cylinder often so as not to run it dry.

I changed the front brake lines on my 2004 dodge ram 1500, 4.7 liter, 2WD. do i need to bleed all four brakes?


Yes. It's easy to get air into the other lines. It's also a good time to make sure you have good, new brake fluid. If you didn't already, **** out the stuff in the reservoir and fill it with new, clean stuff. Now, go to your local auto parts store and get a one man brake bleeder, if you don't have one. It's a huge time saver. Starting with the rear passenger wheel, bleed it until you get new, clean fluid. Keep an eye on the reservoir and don't let it get low or you'll get air in and have to start over. Move on to the rear drivers wheel, and repeat the procedure. Next is the front passenger wheel, and last is the front driver's side wheel. Now you will have clean, new fluid in all 4 brakes, and an air-free system.

Brakes only working on driver side, rear and front, no brakes on passenger side rear and front. fluid good, lines good.


There only a few things that would cause this that you need to check, first start at the front wheel that doesnt work, have someone applie the brake open the bleeder screw if fluid sprays then caliper is bad or caliper slides are frozen, if no fluid comes out then you have a bad brake hose at that wheel, do the same to rear if fluid comes out of bleeder in rear then wheel cylinders are no good if no fluid comes out then brake hose to rear wheels is no good, make sure to have pedal pressed and repush pedal when checking the rear. hope this helps.

How do i bleed the brake system


First, before you do the bleeding, did you "open" any of the lines? Was there a caliper replaced?

If no line was opened, you do not need to bleed the brakes.

If so, please let me know and I will post the bleed procedures for you.

Why are you thinking about bleeding the brakes? Spongy brake pedal?

Sounds like you have a leak in the brake system. The fluid you are seeing is brake fluid.

You need to get this fixed asap.

Bleeding brakes


First off, be sure your master cylinder is full of brake fluid. Now, starting at the driver wheel, behind or on top the caliper is a bleeder screw. Loosen this screw. The brake fluid may start running out on its own(gravity bleeding)if not then you will need someone to pump the brakes. Using a second person, close the bleeder screw and have them pump the brakes then hold the pedal down. While they have the pedal down, open the bleeder screw and then close it after brake fluid stops coming out. Repeat pumping and holding the brake pedal down then open the bleeder screw until you do not see any air bubbles coming out, should only take 2 or 3 times per wheel. Do the same for the rest of the wheels, starting at the drivers wheel then the passenger front wheel, then the driver rear wheel and ending up on the passenger rear wheel. Make sure your master cylinder does not run out of brake fluid or you will have to start over.
