My car has white smoke coming from the exhaust

he causes of white exhaust smoke can vary; however, it is common to see white exhaust smoke when first starting a car, especially on cooler days. This is generally steam caused by condensation. As the engine warms up and the condensation dissipates the white exhaust smoke (steam) is no longer seen. If excessive white exhaust smoke is present well after the engine warms up, it is necessary to have the car inspected for possible internal coolant leaks. Indicators of an internal coolant leak include billowing white exhaust smoke accompanied by a sweet odor or a low coolant reservoir level. An internal coolant leak can also contaminate the engine oil giving it a frothy, milky appearance. Even small amounts of coolant entering the combustion chamber will produce white exhaust smoke.
One of the main causes of white exhaust smoke and coolant loss is a cracked or warped cylinder head, a cracked engine block, or head gasket failure caused by overheating. A cracked head may allow coolant to leak into one or more cylinders or into the combustion chamber of the engine. Dirty coolant, a poorly maintained cooling system, a low coolant level, or a non-functioning cooling fan can cause engine overheating. In addition, engine wear can eventually cause the gaskets to lose their capacity to seal properly allowing internal coolant loss. Intake manifold gasket and head gasket failures are two of the most common sources of internal coolant loss caused by engine wear.
Never remove the radiator cap or coolant reservoir cap while the engine is hot or running as it can cause serious injury; always allow the car to cool down completely first. Checking for a low coolant level in the reservoir is the first step in determining if coolant loss is causing the white exhaust smoke. If the coolant reservoir is at the proper level but excessive white exhaust smoke is present, a cooling system pressure check is required to determine where, if any, coolant leaks are located.

1992 GMC Sierra that has failed smog test twice. The motor is not burning gas, the gas is going straight through.

Has your check engine light come on? If so, have the code read and deciphered. When you say "the gas is going straight through", do you mean that there is raw fuel coming out the exhaust pipe? If no codes are present, you should start with a tuneup - plugs, wires, distributor cap, rotor, points or inductive pickup, fuel and air filters. If the fuel isn't being burned, you have some kind of ignition failure, AND raw gas in the exhaust will fail the hydrocarbon test in a heartbeat. Original exhaust system? Including catalytic converter(s)? If so, converters are probably trashed by now. Good luck.

Loud noise coming from the exhaust

You should try inspecting the exhaust from the underside of the vehicle.
Typically if the exhaust has become very loud, then there is a likelihood that either one of the pipes has corroded through or cracked, or that one of the muffler boxes has failed. To check the muffler box in the case that there is no apparent exterior fault such as corrosion or cracks, then with a cool exhaust or protected hands, shake the exhaust or hit it with your palm under the muffler box. If you can hear a clunking, or lots of loose rust inside the box, then it has likely failed from the inside first.
Exhaust systems generally corrode from the inside out as water is a product of combustion and tends to condense inside the exhaust system.
If you are wondering how long an exhaust system should last, then this is a tough thing to measure. However as water presence is one of the main reasons for exhaust failure, it is common that vehicles which travel extended distances where the engine and exhaust systems can heat up to full operational temperature tend to suffer less corrosion in the exhaust system. This is because the matter of condensation of exhaust gasses is largely prohibited by higher exhaust temperature.

One last thing for you to check is the condition and fit of the exhaust headers or manifold. If you have suffered a gasket failure, or crack in this area, then you will pick up on a higher volume of exhaust noise output.

Good luck.

Where should i find this sensor P0342?

EXHAUST RELATED ERROR CODES

There are 711 possible PO generic DTC error codes. Only 7 of the 711 codes are exhaust related.

PO401: Insufficient EGR Flow

PO402: Exhaust Gas Recirculation (EGR) Excessive Flow Detected

PO410: Secondary Air Injection System Malfunction

PO420: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

PO421: Warm-Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 1)

PO430: Catalyst System Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

PO431: Warm-Up Catalyst Efficiency Below Threshold (Bank 2)

THINGS TO ASK YOURSELF OR YOUR CUSTOMER

Have there been any driveability or performance issues with the vehicle, have there been any recent repairs or tune-up work performed, if so was the check engine light reset and were the codes recorded on previous repair orders.

Do not rely on scan tool data alone. In most applications, the customer will have the check engine light reset prior to repair. If the original cause of converter failure is intermittent, only the catalyst failure code may show up (masking the original reason for converter failure).

The engine management light coming on could be the result of any number of things/systems that are monitored by your engine computer. EGR valve failures are very rare. (Although many get changed by DIYer's trying to "guess" what may be causing the problem.) Your engine computer will record a fault code to tell you why it has turned this light on. I would recommend having your computer system scanned to find out exactly which system the computer is having a problem with, then properly diagnose that system to locate the actual cause of the failure.

What makes a check light comes on

There are to many things to list that will cause the check engine light to come on. Some of the more popular causes are the emission system failures, exhaust, gas, electrical, starter, and so on. You will need to get or find a code reader and have the check engine light code read to know what is the cause of it
