Question about Ford Contour
No - don't change the valve. The code usually means that the DPFE (Digital Pressure Feedback EGR) sensor is indicating EGR flow when the computer is not commanding it. If you look at the EGR value on a scan tool at idle, it will read high and not change much when the EGR is manually opened. This problem is almost ALWAYS the DPFE sensor. Buy one from Ford. The aftermarket ones are junk and don't hold up. You can spend $60 on the part or you can spend $100 on the diagnosis to find out what's wrong. It's worth it to try the part in this case. You will need to clear the code. You should be able to disconnect the battery cables for 30 minutes to clear the code.
