Question about Ford Fairmont
The spark is controlled by a module and sensor inside the distributor, called a thick film module. If either of these components fail you will lose spark.. NO, its not the vehicles computer, it only sends timing information to the module and has no other control. In fact, you can take the computer out and the ignition system would still fire the plugs (but the injectors would not work)..Anyway. You need to set the engne to Top Dead Centre On number one cylinder and then remove and replace the entire distributor. I advise this because if either component has failed, the other will also fail in the near future.. The new distributor has start and finish markings on it. Set the rotor to the start mark and slip it into the engine, it should engage with the oil pump drive and when it is all the way home, the rotor will point at the finish mark, you can then refit the clamp BUT dont tighten it up yet and the cap and leads. Next, check and reset the ignition timing according the the engine type (EFI or CFI) and then tighten the clamp firmly. Getting the distributor to slot into its drive gears and the oil pump drive at the same time is tricky and frustrating so to save yourself time and stress, take it to a qualified mechanic if you have any doubts about your ability to undertake this repair..
