Question about 1989 Toyota 4Runner

3 Answers

Wednesday I needed a jump. After I got it started and disconnected cables, it idled down, lights dimmed and radio stopped playing. Tested battery, it was good. Cleaned posts and 4runner started right up. No problem with lihgts or radio. Drove around town but after a while at red lights idle would slow and battery light wpould come on. Had to keep foot on gas at stops. Been doing that everyday but have not needed to jump start since Wednesday. Alternator or something else?

It sounds like the Alternator is beginning to fail while under load. HOWEVER before jumping to that conclusion: what shape is the Belt in?? I would hate for you to replace the Alternator and find out the Belt was loose, worn, or stretched. A Belt cost way less than a Alternator, even a remanufactured. Check tightness and condition of the Belt first, replace if needed and recheck the system the way you were; then replace the Alternator.
You may also remove the Alternator and have it bench tested for free at most Autoparts Stores (Advance Auto or Autozone). They will place the Alternator under "Load" and see if it meets minimum specifcations.

A good battery with the car off will read almost 13V.A bad battery with the car off may read as high as 11.8V as quirky as it sounds. If you have a certain reading and drive around for just 15-20 minutes and the battery with the car off reads 1/10thV or more lower,it is an alternator. The average alkaline battery life is about 6 years.(that's probably why they offer 60 month warranties).lol.If what I wrote is not the case, please reply and I will think about what else it could be.

I have a 1993 ford mustang lx 5.0 that doesnt seem to want to hold a charge, i have replaced the battery and alternator and it drives fine for a couple of days and then u can watch the guage just drop and...

I had a car that did something very similar to this. I also replaced the battery and had the alternator tested under a load which tested fine. I found that there was some corrosion on the inside of my battery cable terminals which i cleaned, then cleaned the battery posts as well and tightened down my cables and it ran like a champ.
Hope this helps!

Car will not start at all. Heard a faint clicking sound but the engine will not turn over.

Kind of hard on what to tel ya without knowing the kind of car were working on, ( make year model engine size, 4 wheel drive or not air cond or not) The click can come from the starter. working the key to start while looking for the click may find the starter or the relay but how to tell you wher to look depends on the car. If it's the starter then with someone making it click rap on the starter with a hammer or other hard object on the hard medal part and see if it starts, The battery can be too low and it'll still light the lights and play the radio. If the headlights go dim trying to start it then the bater is too low if they go out then the connection from the battery to the starter is dirty or disconnected. clean cables give it a jump and if it starts take it to have the battery tested charged and or replaced.

What could be dragging my battery down after 2 days of not starting it?

Lots of stuff. An after market alarm, malfuntioning radio, bad battery, bad door pin switch for the interior lights. Best thing to do is charge the battery if it's in fact good, thenunhook the negative battery cable & connect a test light from the disconnected cable to the negative battery post. If it's a nice bright light it's got a draw. If it's really dim, that's the memory for the computer,anti-theft,radio memory. I mean dim, like barely lit! That's ok. If you don't have a test light disconnect the negative cable & touch it to the negative battery post a few times & if there's a big spark, there's a draw. If there's a draw & there's nothing on in the car, like an interior light, etc, than start with the inside the car fuse box & while holding the open door pin switch test each fuse for power. If anything has power that shouldn't with the key off that's where to start. Do the same for the under the hood box as well but disconnect the hood light. If you are using the Viper alarm system, junk the system. That alarm causes your problem & in alot of cases a fire.

Guages stop and irratic idle with dimming lights

what probley happened the alternator started to heat up alittle to much and caused the belt to spin on the pulley i would go ahead and get the alternator replaaced as soon as possible. as for the lights dimming and the gauges not working you was running off your battery making the vehicle mess up i would also get your battery checked while your at it.
