Question about Saturn SC2

1 Answer

1995 saturn sc2 problem with tranny, engine revs to 3000 rpm's when in park, then drops to 500. the alternator has needed to be changed twice in the last year. I had the engine replaced 9 months ago (not sure if any electrical issue could be connected to that). What is wrong with my saturn?

Does the the PCM need to be "re-set" when the alternator or battery are changed out?

After reviewing another blog, seems this is an issue with Saturn.

Just don't want to spend $150 on the PCM, if it may not fix the problem. Any suggestions on where to start first...Catalytic Converter?

Hi! You may have an electrical failure. One thing that can cause this is a faulty PCM (powertrain control module). The PCM has connectivity on all electrical current that runs in the car including the engine and transmission. When the PCM is faulty it gives current irregularities that may cause to electrical failures no wonder you had to replace the alternator twice. Once the PCM is replaced you'll be good. Hope this helps and have a good one!

1995 s320 charging system. getting 13.8 at B+ terminal of alternator; however, voltage at battery is less indicating to me there is no charge being sent from alternator to battery. diagram?

Hey Anon, What RPM are you checking the "at battery" voltage... Rev the engine to about 3000 RPM,, you should get 13.5+ volts.. if not, while running >> CAREFULLY<< try disconnecting and reconnecting the terminal at the alternator,,, this sometimes "excites" the alternator and makes it start charging again..

Car will not move 2000 acura 3.2

ok you crank the engine over, it starts,
it can rev. to 3000 rpm for 1 second in park ?
you then select, all gears forward and reverse and car can not move on flat ground, all brakes off?
can you push car in neutral on flat ground, , y/n ?

if no, brakes are bad. (or something more serious , ask)
if yes, tranny is dead (but....)

the if RPM rises, on engine (right foot action) and car MPH is 0
and rpm keeps rising that is a bad tranny (called slip or flare) in "D"
if you set the brakes hard,
and do the A/T stall test. (read the FSM)
and the RPM is way low that is a bad engine. (weak engine power)

if the RPM is good, stall tested. the engine and tranny are working. ( brakes stuck or frozen in ice?)
if the RPM flares, at stall test. it's a bad tranny
do the stall test for 5 sec max. rest for 15min and repeat.
STALL, test, makes tons of ATF heat. and heats the TC big time
RTM, it's all there. See FSM and read the manual.

My1991 mazda 626 will not rev up over 3000 rpm

DO YOU MEAN WHEN YOU ARE ACCELERATING? Or do you mean sitting and reving the engine? If you are just reving the engine in park then the rev limiter is kicking in.

I have a 01 saturn SC2 (auto). When i put it in park, the RPM's rev up high, and dont go back down until i put it into gear. Any ideas what this could be?

Stuck throttle linkage or bad throttle position sensor. Also possible is an air leak on the Intake manifold. What happens is that you allow a certain amount of air to come into the engine when the throttle cable is pressed. But if you have an air leak, additional air is coming in the engine and it is like you have the throttle opened further.

You should have the engine shut off and then look at the throttle cables and work the controls. They should operate easily and shut smoothly. If they do not work smoothly there is a problem.

You also can check the gaskets on the intake manifold by using an old spray bottle and mist water onto the seams of the top of the engine while it runs. If the RPM changes or the engine dies, you have found a gasket to fix or tighten.

The engine should not idle so fast as to cause you to ride the brake hard to stop the vehicle. Autozone, Advance, or Oreilys autoparts will scan your car for free. Sometimes they are reluctant if the "Check" light is not on, but revving up may spur them to help you.

Motor wont idel right drops down to 500 rpm and trys to stall but then goes away and will run right and not happen for a wile 1.9 in a 1995 saturn sc2. the car normal idel is 750 rpm.

You might want to check the air intake. find where the mass airflow sensor is at, usually at the end of the tube that brings in the air throught the air filter. Detach and check the butterfly to see if it is clean. You can buy an inexpensive cleaner and use a screwdriver to help keep open the butterfly so that you can clean just inside the butterfly and in front. This should help.
