Our son has been driving our 1997 mercury villager and the airbag light just started flashing. He has not hit anything. And doesn't know of anyone hitting the van. Can this light just start flashing for no reason. And is it dangerous to drive like this?
It's flashing because there is an issue. nothing to do with an accident.
It may not deploy in accident. Get code for fault.

It may appear if there is a particular sensor fails.
Try reset the indication using the following technique.
Sometimes the problem could be solved.
Advantage is you could use this technique in the future too.
If you can get an OBD 2 scanner off eBay (US$ 6), you could be able to communicate with your car ECU (Electronic Control Unit) using the smart-phone app.
So that, there is a chance to CLEAR all the error indications.
After that, if problem still persists, it means the vehicle need full scan (you can't do this at home, probably seek a vehicle garage).
