Question about 1991 Lexus LS 400

1 Answer

I have a 91 lexus ls400 and its overheating. the only problem i can find is both electric fans dont kick on (i can wire them to a relay to bypass the factory wiring). i took the hoses off the engine and filled the radiator up with water and blew in one end and it flowed through. i did the same with the block. i also filled the block back up with the hoses off and cranked the car and water just drizzled out. does this mean i have a bad water pump or is the problem just a result of the fans not working.

I took the thermostat out of the water neck. That was the first thing that I did. By the way do you know which way the water flost through the radiator (top to bottom or ?) and the direction the water pump flows the water through the system (does it push water through the block or pull it out?) thanks for all of ur help!

Would have repaced the thermastadt. most commen cause of those fans not turning on because thr thermostadt is not letting the hot water flow into the radeattor .by passing the wiring and relays can only lead to bigger problems , but you have proven your fans work. water just drizled out of the block cause you had no water in the house to the pump ( no water to pump) thermostadts, temp sensors or temp sending unit .simple check for themostadt fill up with all houses attached with rad cap off run engine fill rad as needed keep feeling top hose to radiator it should get hot all of the sudden thats your thermostadt opening( working) go to next step check sensors or sending unit. realy best if you get a haynes or chilton at the half priced book store or auto parts storeand go to trouble shooting for over heating

hi i have a lexus ls 400 1991 and it was doing the same thing, i found out this system cannot have air in the coolant at all if it does it will overheat, if you remove the silver bolt on the top of the thermostat housing and fill it will coolant or water, till nothing but coolant comes out then replace the bolt, and keep filling the overflow unit till full, it may resolve your problem, it did mine, these cars run great when they are maintained well, but when they go out they really go out. good luck, loren

Did you check the fan clutch? it should be pulling a lot of air thru the radiator, I just replaced mine, when you shut the car off the fan should not keep spinning (a few revalutions are ok). my temp gauge was only reading 1/2 way, now the temp gauge reads 1/4 and the aircondition now reads 31 degrees coming out the inside vents, the electric fans kick on when the a/c is on. FYI.

All brake lights out on 91 Lexus LS400. I think it's a fuse. Where is the fuse located?

should be located under driver side dash under a panel, on some models they are lined up underneath the hood in thin black plastic boxes that usually have fuses/relays etched into them

Cooling fan stays at one slow speed as engine heats up fans never kick up speed to cool engine causing overheating I was told there was a relay under dash but I can't find it on this 1999 lexus es300

  1. Remove front bumper and grill assembly.
  2. Remove 1 support bolt near front of reservoir.
  3. Remove 2 reservoir mounting bolts.
  4. Remove reservoir from vehicle to gain access to vacuum hose. Disconnect vacuum hose from reservoir fitting at rear of reservoir.
  5. Disconnect electrical connector at relay.
  6. Remove 2 relay mounting bolts and remove relay.

1994 lexus ls400 tachometer speedometer dont work

check for a blown fuse in the fuse panel and if its not that pull the gauge cluster out of the dash and check the power and ground going to it cause most of the time its a bad ground wire or power wire cause people tend to kick wires under the dash on accident or they get worn or come apart

Overheating my car continuously overheat

CHECK FOR LOW COOLANT LEVEL AND REPLACE THERMOSTAT AND THE RADIATOR PRESSURE CAP.IF CAR OVERHEATING AND COOLING FAN NOT WORKING.CHECK COOLANT FAN FUSE AND RELAY.IF BOTH OKAY,HOT WIRE COOLANT FAN,IF FAN WORKS, PROBLEM COULD BE FAULTY COOLANT TEMPERATURE SENSOR,OR FAULTY PCM, IF COOLING FAN DONT WORK WHEN YOU HOT WIRE FAN.THE COOLING FAN ASSEMBLY NEED REPLACING.

My lexus ls400 1991 the two electri fan all time is on

Either the temperature sensor on the radiator, or the relay is bad.
Pull a wire off the temperature sensor on the radiator.
If it stops the fans, then the sensor is bad and the relay ok.

My 91 ls400 acts like it vaper locks dies out has to sit awial then actes like it has low power for awial then serges to normal what may be the problem?

this is a computer problem. 91-96 lexus ls400 are known for having their computers go out on them. I would have never believed it but my ls400 did the same thing. I sent the computer to Auto Computer Exchange in Davie FL. They reprogramed it for $310 sent it back to me in a day. It fixed the car. I have had no problems out of the car. I now work on ls400 on the side to fix the same problem for other people.

1998 Lexus LS400 has no blower

You need to just keep changing fuses until you find the right one. Bypass the old relays with a paper clip in the fuse panel with a paper clip and pliers in the in and out. When they come on you know the problem is the fuse or relay.
