Question about 2002 Volkswagen Jetta TDI

1 Answer

I have a 2002 jetta tdi, a seal in the injector pump was leaking diesel fuel so I got a rebuild kit and installed the new seal. The car would not start untill I retimed the crank, cam, and injector with the timing belt. Now it starts right away but rpms run up without stopping untill i shut it off with the key. Did i put the pump back together wrong?

Don't think you did anything wrong, but...
after retiming you have to relearn the computer stratagies
without a pro scanner the only way will be with about 60 drive cycles

Did you bleed the injectors, water separator. fuel filter. Is the fuel pump running. A Chilton manual would be a handy trouble shooting guide. Diesel fuel injection is complicated and expensive ( Bosch).

Facing front of 7.3 diesel, fuel is leaking at right front fuel injector,,,looks like the banjo fitting,,,what seals this fitting as it can be twisted by hand??

You'll need to pick up an injector install kit for around $40. There are two sizes depending on the size fuel line that runs between your injectors so don't open the bag the kit comes in, until you compare the contents of the kit with whats on your motor. The kit will have new fuel line, clamps, plastic caps and o-rings. Once you remove the fuel line from the pump and then the fuel line between injectors, you can pull the plastic caps off and then remove the old o-rings. Reverse this order to install the new kit.

Diesel fuel leak. looking for diagram of injector pump seals for replacement. the car is a 1982 jetta diesel with the bosch injector pump.

Get a professionally rebuilt pump. Don't try to mess with rebuilding yours, it isn't worth it. I know the rebuilt pumps are high ($450) plus, but it will pay off in reliability and performance.

When were the glow plugs last changed?

They sit over the cylinder like spark plugs and warm the diesel before it goes into the inlet manifold, greatly assists starting.

Engine rpm's increase without increaseing throttle,on start up. Not consistent. Goes back to normal quickly before driving. Happens ocasionally during driving. Fuel economy not affected.

if its petrol the throttle body may be in need of a clean and resetting or it may have a small air leak if its a diesel its worth checking the fuel filter they can get contaminated with oil if you find this the injector seals will also need replacing and the fuel tank and pipes cleaned out

The stuff that you replaced could have an effect on the starting of the vehicle. Take the diesel pump and injectors for calibration this should solve the problem.

I have air coming into the fuel system on my jetta diesel

NO it does not have a fuel pump in the tank. It uses vaccum.
and if their are tiny bubbles in the clear line coming from the fuel filter to the injection pump that is normal. Even when the car is not running it is normal to see bubbles in the line. hope this helps.

2003 vw jetta tdi fuel filter

It is on the passenger side right behind the washer fluid fill tube. You can follow the fuel lines (look like 1/4" black tubes, some are clear) from the injector pump to it. It is a caniser a bit bigger than a normal looking oil filter and sits between the washer bottle and the metal that forms the wheel well. It is held in by a screw type clamp about half way down the cylinder. Probably isn't the fuel filter unless there is air in the lines to the injector pump or they didn't bother to fill the fuel filter up with diesel after putting it in. There is not a fuel pump in the tank in these cars so everything is sucked up by the injector pump and it needs to be primed properly.
