You are going to need to "turn" the pump basket before it will come out... it will not just lift out. Also there is a seal that may be somewhat stuck but it should become unstuck with the turn.

It is recommended to perform this job with a fuel tank level less than
or equal to 1/4 full. This job should also be performed in a well
ventilated area and away from any source of open flames.

    Tools Required

    • Utility knife

    • Philips screwdriver

    • Flat blade screwdriver

    • Dead blow hammer

    • Needle-nose pliers

    • Electrical wire insulation stripper

    • 1/4” rachet with 3inch extension

    • 1/4” drive 6mm socket

    • 1/4” drive 8mm socket

    • 1/4” drive 10mm socket

    • 1 zip-tie

    • 3/4” combination wrench

    • Brake Clean

    • Paper Towels

    • Shop Rags

If the vehicle has some mileage on it the top of the fuel
tank will be fairly dirty. It is recommended to clean this dirt off, to
the best of one’s ability, otherwise it will fall into the fuel tank
while removing the fuel pump. Carefully spray the top of the fuel pump
location with Brake Clean to remove the dirt. Use paper towels to soak
up the excess Brake Clean and dirt.

Disconnect the electrical connections and move them aside. Disconnect
the two chassis fuel lines. A pair of needle-nosed pliers works well.
The key is to push the round side (opposite of the flat side) inward and
pull up on the chassis fuel line. This, in turn, releases the lock on
the tab within the fuel tank cover. Be gentle for these fuel lines (like the ones on the fuel filter) can be brittle.

Now that the fuel lines and electrical connections are disconnected use
the flat blade screwdriver and dead blow hammer to rotate the fuel
tank cover trim ring counter-clockwise (to the left). This will relieve
pressure on the seal and allow the cover to come off.

Gently pry the fuel tank cover up to reveal the fuel pump and inner fuel tank

There is a green and black connector on the underside of the fuel tank cover. This is for the fuel tank level sending unit.

The fuel pump electrical connections and fuel supply line are
also connected to the underside of the fuel tank cover. The fuel
supply line is difficult to remove (one-time-use connectors hold the
line onto both the pump and tank cover). The fuel pump can be removed
with the fuel tank cover still attached via the wires and fuel supply
line. Once out of the car the fuel supply line will be easier to remove
    from the fuel tank cover.

There are tabs alongside the outside of the fuel pump that
lock the pump in place with the fuel tank basket. The fuel pump needs to
be rotated counter-clockwise (to the left) to unlock it from the fuel
    tank basket.
Audi makes a special fuel pump removal tool but the fuel pump can be
carefully removed without the help of this tool. To remove the fuel
pump without the Audi tool, use the flat blade screwdriver and the dead
blow hammer in the same fashion as was used to remove the fuel tank
    cover trim ring.

Insert the screwdriver onto one of the reliefs on the outer
ring of the fuel pump. Be gentle with the dead blow hammer. It only
takes a little effort to move the fuel pump. Once the fuel pump rotates
counter-clockwise (about a centimeter) it can then be lifted straight
out and removed from the vehicle

There may be some sediment in the bottom of the fuel pump basket
that either already existed or was introduced when opening up the fuel

One method to remove this (if the fuel is around 1/4 full) is
to use a few paper towels. Submerge your hand and a paper towel into
the bottom of the basket and soak up and grab the sediment. It is
recommended to wear a rubber/latex glove to eliminate the fuel vapor
smell on your skin and exposure to any open cuts/bruises on your hand.

I really hope this helps as it took me a long long time to get this up for you...

Not getting fuel..have pulled off line and checked the filter and found it clean. Also the primer is not getting fuel. What could be the problem? Im disabed and dont have extra money

this could be a fuel pump problem that needs replacing. you will have to check to see if the fuel pump is working. depending how movable you are you might be able to do the job, it will need tools to check. you can try to see if you hear the fuel pump running while someone tries to start the car while you listen at the fuel tank fill hose(gas cap). if you don`t you can try hitting the fuel tank bottom and see if it starts to work. if so then the pump is bad.

1998 landcruiser won't run on main tank but will run on sub tank

It could be either the switch is broken, pop it out and look for shorts or anything. The other thing that comes to mind is checking the fuel filter and fuel pump or the solenoid that switch between the tanks.

Need to know what relay runs the fuel pump im trying to change the filter out and need to pull them so i can clear the line

Go under the dash pull the fuel pump fuse red 10 amp, if you cant find it do this..... let the car sit overnight, DON'T turn the key to the on position at all..... remove the gas cap the next day, jack up the vehicle and support with stands and wheel chocks, wear protective eye wear etc.
use a flat drain pan and with the new fuel filter in hand remove the old one being careful not to allow fuel to hit the ground, be sure to place the new one with the flow arrow going toward the engine, tighten hose clamps/inspect hose for cracks etc., after it is installed turn on the key and test for possible leaks, you are done!!!!

Ok i know now that the cap with the main fuel line running down to the pump its just the cap now my fuel pump will now pull out anything im doing wrong? and how low should fuel be? sorry again plse help...

Remove the cap together with the rubber o-ring. The fuel pump sits in a sprung cradle inside the tank. This cradle also needs to be twisted anti-clockwise (about half inch) to unclip it. After twisting, before removing thepump, take note of the direction of the cradle so you ca re-align it when refitting. Be careful, the plastic bits on the cradle tend to become brittle from constant exposure to the fuel. To reinsert the pump just re-align the cradle push down on it a little to make sure it is seated and turn clockwise till you feel it click into place.

How do you remove fuel pump thru access hole under back seat in 99 cougar

just finished one on my 99 cougar... remove the back seat, take out the rubber ring that has the fuel pump wires running through it. on the end of the wires is a clip that has to be removed before you can unplug it... it is metal... you just pull straight out to the side and it will come out... then remove the plug from top of fuel pump.... then feel directly to the right is a nother plug that has to be unplugged.... then with a long screwdriver (flat head) and a hammer knock the keeper ring clock wise to get it out from under the tabs.... slide the rings down the fuel lines... NOTE: THESE LINES ARE NOT TO BE REMOVED..... Pick fuel pump housing up out of tank and remove the pump, and replace with new one.... you may have to drop the fuel tank a little to pick it up out of tank... that's easy too... crawl up under it make sure it is on jack stands and the emergency brake pulled, and in park.. chalk the front wheels just too make sure it doesn't move.. then on the front of the tank there is two bolts one on each side.. remove them and tank will drop down enough to do job.... hope this helps

Chevy cavalier 1998 2.4 ltthe motor starts but sudenly stops after 10 or 20 seconds running i cheked the gas pump line and it works ok, spark plugs are ok fuses oare ok the swuitch ignition seems to be in...

the fuel pump is triggered by the engines oil pressure switch upon starting
when oil pressure reaches normal psi the relay takes over powering the fuel pump
you see know that your relay is not operating now for the pump

Chevy 2.8 (LB8) won't fire

ok if you have spark normally the module is ok well you say you have fuel is it fuel injected and if it is how much fuel pressure do you have you should have at least 35 psi of pressure minimum if not suspect clogged fuel filter or bad pump

My 1990 cadillac seville is running rough changed spark plugs cap and rotor i changed the cat still run rough dont wanna spend more money if i step lightly on the gas its goes the more i step on it it gets...

I have had this problem. if the spluttering start at a certain point on the fuel gauge. and when you fill it up it goes ok. then the fuel pump in the tank is breaking down. because when it gets to a level the pump has to work harder to pull up the fuel. however if it happens at any level of petrol that can be muck in the tank. or muck in the filler cap key hole. some cars breath through there. clean it in boiling water. now for muck in fuel try AMITECH products sludge remover. $8 or so. first . or you could try taking the pipe of the carbaretter and blowing air back into the tank. blasting away muck from pump it will not hurt it. might go for a while. failing that drain the tank and clean out with sludge remover. the other thing it could be is a slight hole in the tank. probably not. or a relay that gets hot.test relays do air thing try sludge remover and boil petrol cap before spending any money. use the air line that fills the tyres but take off pettrol cap first. just a little blast will do. few things to try there. hope it helps or you have to drop the tank clean it and change fuel pump. and thats expensive. liz
