Check to see if the cable for the transmission is still hooked to the throttle body. If yes it sounds like the governor is bad. It is under a round steel cover on the drivers side of the transmission

I have a 97 GMC Sierra 4x4 1500 automatic transmission and it won't shift into reverse it does fine in all other gears. My dad said he looked at it and one of the bands is stretched out, but i asked the...

There is no band for reverse in this transmission and there is no shift solenoid function in reverse. There are a couple things that can cause a no reverse problem.#1 problem with the reverse input clutches such as burned or damaged clutches and/or leaking drum.#2The other most common problem is a stripped reaction shell although you usually loose 2nd and 4th gear when that happens. If you have good neutral, all 4 forward gears and the transmission is full of fluid then I would say that the bearing between the input drum and reverse input drum has failed and there are pieces of bearing stuck in the reverse drum and keeping the clutches from applying. No simple fix here and dont waste your money on fluid and filter or a shift solenoid.Time for an overhaul.Let me know if I can help.

Will not shift out of 1st gear and no reverse its making a winding sound

From what you are saying, it sounds like your transmission has gone out. Your sun gear reaction shell has likely broken. I would recommend overhauling your current transmission or buying a re-manufactured transmission from a reputable company. AC DELCO makes good replacement transmissions.

Thanks for using FixYa.

How do i check the transmission fluid in a 1997 gmc sierra

Transmission Fluid Fluid Level Checking
  1. Operate vehicle for 15 minutes or until the transmission fluid reaches a temperature of 180-200°F (82-93°C).
  2. Ensure vehicle is on a level surface.
  3. With brakes applied, move the shift lever through each gear range for about 3 seconds.
  4. Place transmission in PARK position.
  5. Set parking brake and allow engine to idle for 3 minutes.
  6. Remove the transmission fluid level indicator and wipe clean. Reinsert the indicator and give it a full twist until fully seated.
  7. Remove the indicator.
  8. Observe sides of the indicator. The lowest level reading must be within the hot cross-hatched area.

Transmission wont shift into any forward gears or reverse gear on my 1996 gmc sierra 1500 4wd

4WD! the transfer case is not stuck in neutral is it? Fluid levels are good? Have you noticed a decrease in mileage or power prior to this problem? If no then time to take it in for service it sounds like. Transmission fluid is not consummed, so if it leaked out then you may be able to fill it up and get the leak fixed, if too late then its a rebuild on the tranny.

I have a 1992 GMC Sierra with a 5.7 motor. When

It sounds to me like your transmission is not well. It's working when the fluid is cold but not as it warms up. Pull the dipstick and check your transmission fluid for color and smell. It should be pinkish and smell like oil. My guess is that it will be closer to brown than pink and have a burnt oil smell to it. It the transmission is full, check the level with the trans warm, engine running, in neutral.I'd be shopping for another transmission. If the fluid is below the add mark, you an usually buy yourself some time on the replacement by changing the trans fluid and filter. At the same time add a transmission treatment with the new oil,I've had good luck with Lucas. Hope this helps.

Transmission

Transmission model is 4L60E,and the symptoms you are describing is a common failure on these transmissions all the way back to it's predecesor, the 700 R 4 model. The reverse input shell, splines into the low/reverse planetary sun gear. The reverse input shell has a collar with splines made into it,and these splines are prone to stripping, and sometimes the collar itself will break free from the shell.Without the shell functioning,no reverse, and this is likely what you are hearing.Aftermarket companies sell heavy duty, and standard duty, replacements.Eventually, you will lose the forward gears also.Good luck.
