Turn crank so #1 piston is at top dead center.(remove #1 spark plug try putting a straw in the cylinder.BUT do not let it fall all the way in.) Turn crank so #1 pistion travels all the way to the top.(watch the strawit will just start to go back down)Put the Distributor in and align your rotor bug with the#1 plug wire on the cap.uU may have to pull the dist., up and realing the gear splines again in order to align the rotor .then set you timeing.

I put new head gaskets on my 93 Chevy ck1500 5.7,put it back together the TB is shooting flames,I know the timing is off where do I go from here, wont start

Set cylinder 1 to TDC on compression stroke, remove distributor and reset to stock marks. Generally there are timing marks for this. If you cannot locate the timing marks then note the direction that the rotor under the distributor cap rotates and reinstall it so it's pointing right at the cylinder 1 contact or just barely before when cylinder 1 is at TDC. That may get you close enough to start it. Then you will need a timing light to adjust the timing to the proper spec.

In the future mark the distributor cap and housing position relative to manifold or block prior to removal. Makes re-assembly a breeze.

Distruburtor in 94 s10 4.3l has been removed without mariking anything how do you get everything back in time

ok Very simple, make sure you put the engine in TDC on cylinder 1, it will take a few tries to get it right but set the distributor the cylinder 1 and drop it in if you think its right double check with the dist cap and see if the rotor lines up properly, if not pull it out and try again. its pretty simple just time consuming and frustrating.

Definitely because the timing is out. You will have to re-time the distributor. Bring the engine up to #1 TDC. Remove the dist cap and check the rotor location (it should be pointing forward slightly to the drivers side). If its pointing to the right rear, you'll need to rotate the engine one more full revolution. You can verify its TDC by checking the locator "V" on the crank balancer. Mark the location of the distributor to the base. Loosen off and lift out, use a long screwdriver down inside the hole to slightly turn the drive so it points just behind where #1 post is on the distributor cap when mounted. You may have to do this a few times to get right.

How do u time a 1996 s10 4.3 vortec

The vortec 4.3 is self timing, and not adjustable. if you have the distributor out, you need to have the engine on #1tdc, and install the distributor with the rotor on, once the distributor is in place, the rotor must point to the small #6 on distributor body.(the top edge of the black plastic housing, there is a small arrow, with a #6 on it).remembering the cap is cross fire, the rotor should point to #1 cyl on the cap.
