Need to know model year and what engine you have as well as the fault codes you had that made you decide to change the crank sensor? u can't be getting fuel and spark and not have the engine start unless the engine is out of time (defective timing chain) or the fuel injectors are not delivering fuel to the cylinders,u can test the fuel injectors for proper operation by use of a $5 tool called a NOID light, it plugs into the injector electrical connector and blinks when the engine is cranked.

It wasnt reading anything. It was a suggestion from the parts store.

  • comptonbaile Aug 02, 2010

The car over heated and has since not started. If that helps any.

the system is controlled by a computer, this computer will sense and record a fault code when any system that runs the engine fails, you MUST have the system scanned to pull the fault codes for the memory of the computer, guessing is a waste of your time and money as you have already found out, there is no magic fix, certain tests must be done. You can buy a basic scanner for about $100 from a parts store, the connector it plugs into is under the dash in front of the steering wheel, please run the test and don't listen to parts store want to be techs, they are not trained to fix these very complex system, it took me 20 years to learn what i know about Fords electronics.

  • comptonbaile Aug 02, 2010

Already own one. And like I said it isnt reading anything.

AND U RAN THE NOID TEST OF THE INJECTORS? THEY ARE DELIVERING FUEL TO THE CYLINDERS?

if this engine overheated the head gaskets are blown, that is why it won't start, coolant is entering the cylinders, I am 100% sure of this, stop putting parts on and pull the cylinder heads off.

  • comptonbaile Aug 02, 2010

Yes cylinders are getting fuel. Yes it is on.

  • yadayada
    yadayada Aug 02, 2010

You have damaged the engine when it overheated, that is why it doesn't start, as I just said.

  • yadayada
    yadayada Aug 02, 2010

U can reject the solution i provided but that doesn't change the fact you damaged the engine by overheating it, this is an aluminum engine and they are not forgiving when run hot, the very least you will need to do is pull the cylinder heads and have them checked for cracks and machined flat and replace the head gaskets, if u would have said u overheated this in the original post it would have saved u and me a lot of time. Good Luck

2006 nissan x terra. spins over, wont start. replaced fuel pump assembly, crank sensor, left side cam sensor. not getting any cranking rpm from scanner. HELP !

This already sounds all kinds of bad.
Lets start with spark. Did you verify it can make 30kv at all plugs while cranking? f you havent...start there. Do you have any codes in any modules? Engine, theft, trans, body?
Do you have vacuum cranking, do you have MAF reading cranking? do we know if its mechanically still in time? Did you do a cranking compression test? If you have spark, and you remove the fuel pump relay...does it start when it isnt flooding? What is your system and reference voltage...what is cranking vacuum? And what tests did you run that inspired changing all that stuff? Check the c ranking rpm in Generic mode just rpm onscreen, some OEM software doesnt update well during cranking, with one pid selected, solus should update better than 10x a sec, If you still have no signal...you need to measure the crank sensor wires or verify the crank sensor ring is even turning,

2000 mercury cougar will not start

If it is getting spark I will assume the timing belt is working.
You say the fuel pump is good, so what is the fuel pressure at the rail ?
Are the spark plugs wet or dry ? Can you get it to try to start by using starting fluid ?
You may have to get someone to check the computer for trouble codes which requires a scanner or code reader.

Cranks no start just died restarted a couple of times now nothing

Check to see if your fuel pump is kicking on. You should hear a buzzing sound for a second or two when you first turn the key. If you don't hear it, check your fuel pump fuse/relay or fuel reset if equipped. It could be a clogged fuel filter. You need to make sure gas is getting fuel to the engine. If it is, then you need to check for spark. It may be because of spark plugs/coils, wires, distributor, dist.cap, rotor, cam sensor, crank sensor, ecm. When you car doesn't start but cranks, there is many things that can cause that. You need to do a spark test and make sure that your getting good spark. It could be the timing belt. You need fuel and spark to start the car.

Car wont stsrt

will the engine crank when you turn the key, and will not start or does nothing happen when key is turned on. If nothing happens when you turn the key, you may have an dead battery. if it will crank and not start, may not be getting fuel or the engine isnt fireing. Check fuel first, then check to see if it the spark plugs are getting fire.

My 1994 park ave, sometimes it starts, sometimes it wont, it does not matter if is is hot or cold, when it is running it runs smooth like there's nothing wrong. I replaced most of the fuel system, spark...

You have three choices. First, check the spark and coil system to ensure you are getting a spark. Pull off a plug wire from the coil pack and crank. Have someone watch to see sparks snapping off the coil pack. If you don't have any replace the control module under the coil packs.

Second, you may not be getting enough fuel pressure. Put a gauge on the fuel pressure test port. You may have a bad oil pressure sensor, located down above the oil filter. Check that oil pressure sender and make sure the connector is pushed in. The power to the fuel pump runs through the oil sender. If the engine starts and oil pressure doesn't come up quickly, the computer will shut off the fuel pump. Check this and you can also manually engage the fuel pump from the relay block down by the passenger feet.

Third choice, and it's a long shot, check the harmonic balancer and the crank position sensor. If the sensor is bad, the computer has no idea when to fire the spark plugs. A magnet is on the harmonic balancer and flys by a sensor to induce a voltage in the coil and tell the computer what position the crank is in.

You also may have a bad computer.

You can figure it out.

Audi 100s 1993 cranks doesn,t start, turns over no start. when it starts runs rough and stalls.

could very well be a faulty sensor, leaky vaccum hose, bad coil packs, needing of new fuel filter, spark plugs, wires.

Have you checked your fuel pressure to make sure it is good. You can do this with fuel pressure tester on the fuel rail.

Also check every cylinder for spark
If you don't have any spark, or very weak spark, you could have bad coil pack, module, or crank sensor.

You can remove one plug at a time, and place it back on plug wire, place it on top of engine block, have someone else turn motor over well you observe to see if there is spark.

Do you have a service or check engine light on? If so, I would have the engine codes read to pinpoint exact problem area.

Let me know if you have any questions or need further help

I have a 1991 740 volvo, was driving down he street and it died, after i pulled over it wouldn't start

Check if you still getting fuel and sparks, two items need to keep the car running. Check fuses and fuel pump relay, if needing new relays go to the junk yard and get couple of them for nothing. Checking making sure you getting fuel and fuel pump working properly, unplug the the main coil wire to distributor so the car wont start we just want the engine just to turn over. under the hood, locate fuel filter, disconnect the line to or from it, wrap the bottom of the hose with old clothe firmly and to remember to point the house downward away from your face so it wont splash at you. and have a friend turn ignition over just like starting, see if the fuel come out with good pressure. if fuses and relay check out, your crank sensor may be bad, being 91' strong possibility. crank sensor send info to computer telling to send fuel to your injectors. For sparks, make sure you plug the main wire to distributor back. pull one plug wire and get spare plug, plug it and ground the plug and have a friend turn the engine over and see if you getting sparks, do not touch the plug, big shock. No sparks, check the coil if you getting 12v, if yes, than your cam sensor is faulty. The cam sensor work just like the crank sensor but telling the computer to send sparks to the distributor. Common for older European cars, crank and cam sensor tend to become faulty after years of service due to age and heat abuse.
