Doesn't shift and shavings are in the pan.

I need to find a book on the actual transmission telling me how to rebuild it. does anyone know where i can find one of these? unless someone knows what the problem would be if while driving it does now change gears it only stays in 1st. and also there are shavings in the pan.

Having owned a Trans Repair Shop years ago.

The rebuild manual---ATSG Manuals. Avail on their website or locally at a Trans Parts Supply house. Ask a local trans shop where they get there parts and get it there.

The fact you have shavings in the pan. The ONLY answer, is to pull the trans and take it to a Trans Shop and have it rebuilt. Then install a rebuilt converter and add a quart of fluid, before installing the converter.
You do what is called an over the counter. Your bring in the trans, they rebuild it in a couple days with all the latest updates. That is the least expensive way to go.
If they pull it, you surely will have things broken and pieces and parts missing when you get it back.

I would examine the color of your transmission fluid first. Is it bright red or is it turning dark? Does it smell burnt? These are signs of wear.

Next step is to drop the pan and examine for metal shavings and excessive organic band material. If these are present, you are pretty much in need of a transmission rebuild.

Put the vehicle in Park, disconnect the shifter from the shift lever on the trans, adjust the linkage or cable so the connection is clearly a slip in/on connection and tighten things back up. Hopefully this will solve your non-reverse. As for all the gunk and metal shavings, friend, you better have another tranny standing by in your garage when this one stops working completely.

metal shavings is a good indicator the trany needs rebuilt,( those metal shavings are from drive gears inside of trany)but the only way to know 100% is to take it in. sorry that happened to you....i know that's not the answer you where looking for.

3-4 shifting problem

Make sure you check the level of the transmission, for dodges you must have the truck in neutral for checking. Try servicing the transmission, When the transmission pan is down look for any metal shavings in the pan, if there is not any present you may have a problem with the 3-4 transmission shift solenoid and is best to take it to a licenced service tech for testing. He will have a special scan tool to command the soleniods on/off and will tell you if theres any problems.

Transmission is not shifting into third gear. I

Generally, if a transmission shop has told you that you do not need a new transmission, you do not need a new transmission. Let them replace the shift solenoid (they won't have to remove the transmission to do this, just the pan, fluid and filter) and tell them to use the Sonnax Heavy Duty 2-3 Shift valve as well (this can be done without removing the transmission too).
Then if it doesn't shift, you will need a complete rebuilt. Tell them you want a new torque converter, a hardened input shaft, a 29-element Borg-Warner input sprag, The Beast sun shell, a new reverse drum, an extra wide Carbon Fiber power band, a Sonnax .490" Boost valve, a Sonnax cast-aluminum pinless forward accumulator, the Sonnax "Super Hold" 1-2 and 3-4 servos, all Alto Red Eagle frictions and full-thickness Kolene steels, as a minimum over a stock rebuild. 4L60E's are weak and die at about 100,000-150,000 miles, sooner if you tow regularly. This build will cost you about 500 bucks more than a stock rebuild, but you will then have a bullet-proof transmission.

My trany wont go in revers and will not shift forward gears untill u let off the throtle a litle

Could be a need to rebuild transmission, but start with a simple transmission fluid change and filter change. If filter is plugged, could prevent the pressure build up necessary for automatic transmission to engage.

All of this assumes the fluid level is correct.

If you can do yourself, probably less than $20, closer to $100 to $150 at a shop, and they will drop the transmission pan and tell you it needs a $3000 rebuild because of grit in the pan. (all transmissions accumulate grit and fine metal shavings. There is a magnet in the bottom of the pan to attract any small shavings.)

Transmission bad

Hi. the first thing here is to check the transmission fluid level. If its not low, i would schedule a transmission flush with the filter change. If the trans mission is still having a hard time shifting after the flush and filter change, you may have a bad shift solenoid that may need to be replaced. This will require you or the tech to drop the transmission pan. the solenoids are located there inside the pan and, if they are malfunctioning, the transmission with shift abnormally. while the pan is dropped, you or your mechanic should inspect the bottom of the pan for small metal fragment. if there is any type of metal gear fragments that are laying on the pan once it is visible, this will confirm major gear separation. You will have to rebuild this transmission at this time.

Please rate and god bless.

Transmission wont shift into reverse

By the grayish color, fluid being thick, and metal shavings, the clutches are pretty much worn out. It's time to either rebuilding your transmission or just installing a good used one. The fluid normally should be a reddish color. The gray is from the actual clutch material going away.
