If it is the 4.0 engine there have always been bad to have a cracked head, right between the valves in one of the cylinders.

It could be the fan clutch not engaging which will not pull air through the radiator, it may still appear to be spinning but it could not be at the correct RPM for adequate cooling. Hope that helps.

The Pulse Width Modulated (PWM) radiator cooling fan relay is located behind the front bumper fascia below the right head lamp.

What should be the operating temp of Grand Cherokee on warm day? Mine sometimes runs 240-250 degrees

U didn't say the engine, if it is a 6cylinder then around 195-200 F, if a V8 they run very hot, around 225 F, so you have a problem, is the coolant clean? no rust present? I would suspect that you need the radiator pulled and roded out by a radiator shop.

My 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee's Temperature Gauge is registering HOT (check Gauges light comes on) the Jeep smells like it is running hot, but there is antifreeze in the radiator. Help me please.

You may have a stuck closed thermostat or the impeller has failed on the water pump.

Replace them both. You never trust a stat that has gotten hot, and there is no sure fire way to test. You can take it out, put the car back together and see if the engine still gets hot to determine if it's the stat, or the water pump, but once you do all that, you might as well just replace them both.

You also need to make sure the radiator is not all slugged as well, and make sure the radiator cooling fans are both working.

There is a cooling fan relay that is prone to failure as well. Mine did in my '03 Jeep Cherokee. It's located behind the right headlight, and requires that you remove the headlight, drill a hole in the plastic shield, and replacing the relay. You can get a new one at the auto parts store. 2001 Jeep Grand Cherokee- fan that sits closest to radiator

Have you tested the fan sending unit on the engine? disconnect that and if the fan runs (Key on) that is most likely the problem.

Radiator fan for 2001 Jeep Cherokee

Had this problem and one thing that even Chilton manuals only show in fine print sorta say is that Jeep cherokee has a relay sensor for the coolant fan usualy right behind the passenger or driver side headlight you may have to remove the bumper also its rather easy. Its a liitle black box thats screwd down on the panel just unscrew it unplug it replace mine ran me around $60.00.Before I learned about this after replacing the thermostate and just about to rip out the water pump my buddy told me about the sensor after replacing over a year ago no problems.
