Question about 1997 Chevrolet Lumina

Would the broken speedometer cable affect the shifting of gears? We have an automatic. Went for a drive yesterday and on the way home, our speedometer cable broke and then we noticed we had problems with the shifting of the gears. Sluggish taking off from a red light or stop sign, and also seems to have difficulty shifting from first to second.

How did the cable break? Or did it break? Most cars don't have cables anymore. It is all electronic. Did you hit something or run over something in the road that could have damaged the wires? The speed sensor is on the rear of the tranny, and the shifter is on the side, both are electric. A broken speedo won't have anything to do with the shifting of the car, but a faulty TCM will. You might try going that route, I would find a car just like yours and borrow the module and see if changes anything. You can buy one on ebay for $100, the dealer will charge you $300. Check out the fluid in the tranny first, then check your fuses, all of them, then find the TCM under the dash on the drivers side wall. Then make sure there isn't a raccoon under there wrapped around your shifter. If all this fails, then you have a serious problem, the shift solenoids are bad, the clutch is bad, according to the book it says that shudder in first gear is, low oil pressure, defective converter, leak in servo supply unit, misadjusted brake band, or defective sprag clutch. Check it out. Hope this helps.

FIRST THERE ISNT A SPEEDOCABLE. SOUNDS LIKE THE VSS(VEHICLE SPEEED SENSOR ) WIRING IS DAMAGED OR THE SENSOR WENT BAD. THE COMPUTER USES THIS AS A REFERENCE SIGNAL TO KNOW WHEN THE TRANSMISSION SHOULD SHIFT.

My 1997 Chevy Cavalier automatic transmission is stuck in neutral and the shifter just glides from park, won't engage in any gears.

If the shift handle moves extremely freely (more than normal), changes are that the shift cable has become disconnected from the shift lever. This would explain the indicator not moving out of neutral.
You will need to access the shift lever by removing the console cover. Once you access the shifter check the cable connection to the level. If the cable is broken, it will need replacement. If the cable clip has broken or fallen off, it will need to be reattached.

Look on the backside of the transmission where the cables attach. If both of them are still connected than they have dislodged at the shifter under the center council. You can have a helper move the shifter while looking at the transmission to see if they move.

That shift cable is bad and needs to be replaced. I have seen this on LH cars like the 300m, Intrepid, Concorde, and LHS.

Transmission and Service Engine Soon light

it might be your vehicle speed sensor. It affects your speedometer, your cruise control and your trans shift points. Also, your throttle position sensor (TPS) affects shift points.

Shift CABLE?...On my way from Chicago to Milwaukee, my shift stick (automatic) got stuck in last gear, as I tried to pry it from last gear it became losen and stuck in drive. I got home safely but I knew...

Disconnect cable at the trans and try to move the shift lever. If cable moves freely, try to move control arm on trans to make sure it's free. (don't forget,,,do this with engine off and wheels chocked so it dosen't roll away on you!
Chances are the cable is bad.
