How do you replace a water pump? It looks like one of the bolts on the water pump is behind the timing belt cover.

It is and i think you have to remove the timing belt as well

I am replacing the water pump on my 1996 Isuzu Rodeo. One of the water pump bolts is under the lower timing belt cover. However, the lower timing belt cover appears to connect around the crank shaft...


Hello Ralph,

What you actually going to have to do is take both timings covers off eventually. The waterpump is driven by the timing belt, and will have to be removed along with various other components.

The pulley bolted to the crankshaft will have to be removed, as well as the entire fan assembly. I forget what the socket is I used on it, but I believe it was 1-1/8".

Timing belt


TIMING BELT & SPROCKETS R & I
NOTE: Some procedures may differ slightly due to engine
construction.
Removal
1) Remove all necessary air ducts. Position No. 4 piston at
TDC of compression stroke. Align timing marks. See Fig. 2. Remove fan
and fan shroud. Remove belts. If necessary, remove radiator and
splashguard.
2) Prevent engine from rotating and remove crankshaft timing
pulley retaining bolt. Remove upper and lower timing belt covers.
Remove spring from tension pulley. Loosen adjusting bolt and move
pulley toward water pump. Remove timing belt.
CAUTION: Ensure pistons are at TDC when rotating camshaft or damage
may result.
Inspection
1) Handle timing belt carefully. Avoid twisting or kinking
belt. Do not allow belt to become contaminated by water, oil, dirt or
other contaminates. Inspect belt for cracks or damage. If necessary,
replace.
2) Measure tension pulley spring length and force. Spring
length should not exceed 2.76" (70.2 mm) and spring force should not
be less than 197-347 lbs. (27-48 kg).
3) Replace tension pulley spring if not within specification.
Installation
1) Pull tensioner fully toward water pump side and
temporarily tighten retaining bolt. Ensure No. 4 cylinder is at TDC on
compression stroke by rotating crankshaft until keyway aligns with
mark on front crankshaft seal housing (12 o'clock). Rotate camshaft
until timing mark on cam gear (arrow) aligns with mark on upper
camshaft cover (notch). See Fig. 2.
NOTE: When timing marks are aligned as stated above, No. 4 piston
is at TDC on compression stroke.
2) Position timing belt over crankshaft sprocket, oil pump
sprocket, camshaft sprocket and tensioner in that order. Ensure belt
is positioned in sequence given and without slack between sprockets.
Loosen tension sprocket adjusting bolt allowing spring tension to
tighten belt. Tighten adjusting bolt temporarily.
3) Temporarily install crankshaft pulley bolt and rotate
crankshaft 2 complete revolutions in opposite direction of engine
rotation, until marks on crankshaft and front oil seal retainer are
aligned again. See Fig. 2. Loosen tensioner lock bolt, allowing
tesioner spring to fully adjust tension. Tighten tensioner lock bolt.
4) Install timing belt covers. To complete installation,
reverse removal procedures. Tighten all bolts to specification. See
TORQUE SPECIFICATIONS table at end of this article.

How to remove and install timing belt on 1989 eagle summit 1.5


All Mitsubishi cars pretty much hide the water pump under the timing belt. You should buy all new belts for the car and consider replacing the water pump at the same time.You will have to take off the power steering belt, the alternator belt, the upper belt cover, support the motor, take off the motor mount, jack up the right front corner of the car, take off the front right tire, take off the engine plastic under cover, line up the TDC timing mark, Take off the front wheel ,take off the plastic s[lash cover, take off the lower pulleys, take off the lower engine cover, observe the timing marks/arrows and highlight with paint,take off the timing belt, counter balancer belt if there is one, water pump belt, and now you can unbolt the water pump, scrape the gasket, and replace it. Now the good news, if you have tools,a compressor, an air gun(for lower pulley bolt), patience , and four to eight hours to kill, you can actually save money and do it your self.

  2. Drain the cooling system.
  3. Remove or disconnect the following:
    Negative battery cable Upper radiator hose Timing belt. Refer to the Timing Belt procedure. Idler pulley Water pump

  1. Install or connect the following:
    Water pump. Tighten the bolts in two passes, in sequence, to 18 ft. lbs. (25 Nm). Idler pulley. Torque to 38 ft. lbs. (52 Nm). Timing belt Upper radiator hose Negative battery cable
  2. Fill the cooling system.
  3. Start the engine and check for leaks.

Cannot remove timing cover on 1989 isuzu pickup. stopped by crank bolt


A trick would be to put a breaker bar on the bolt and against the passenger frame and use the starter to break the bolt loose. You just "bump" the starter and use it get the bolt loose. If its a manual trans, when tighteneing the bolt, put it in 4th gear and lock the parking brake, and torque the bolt to 90lbs.

For remove in a 2.0L
  1. Disconnect the negative battery cable.
  2. Properly drain the engine coolant into a clean container for reuse.
  3. Remove the timing belt.
  4. Unfasten and remove the timing belt rear protective covers.
  5. Detach the hose from the water pump.
  6. Unfasten the water pump attaching bolts, then remove the water pump and seal ring.
To install:
  1. Thoroughly clean and dry the mounting surfaces, bolts and bolt holes.
  2. Using a new sealing ring, install the water pump to the engine and hand-tighten the retaining bolts.
  3. Attach the hose to the water pump.
  4. Fasten the timing belt rear protective covers, then install the timing belt and properly adjust the tension.
  5. Tighten the water pump bolts to 18 ft. lbs. (24 Nm).
  6. Install the timing belt cover and related parts.
  7. Connect the negative battery cable.
  8. Fill cooling system and check for leaks. Start the engine and allow to come to normal operating temperature. Recheck for leaks and top-off the coolant.

behind timing cover, i believe it run by the timing belt. do timing belt when replacing waterpump, kind of a big job.

How do you fix the water pump on a 1997 nissan maxima? Where is the water pump located on a 1997 nissan maxima?


The water pump is located behind the timing chain cover. There are two black plates on the front cover. The one near the front of the car has the water pump behind it. The other one has the timing chain tensioner behind it. First you must drain the coolant. Then support engine and remove engine mount. Then remove drive belts. Then remove the two black plates. Push the tensioner in and lock it with a paper clip. Then remove the two bolts holding the tensioner and remove tensioner. Then remove the water pump bolts. Rotate engine crankshaft the take tension off of water pump (about 20 degrees). Then install two bolts into water pump threaded flange (M8). Tighten M8 evenly as water pump will come without damaging it. Check for corrosion. Then replace with new one. Make sure you use new "O" rings. Lubricate with engine oil. Put the original three bolts back in the water pump. Then install timing chain tensioner and black covers. Replace belts and engine mounts. Add coolant and pressure test system.

1989 Isuzu pickup how to align timing marks on cam and crank?


The Isuzu is a strange animal-when you do the timing belt you set it with #1 TDC "BUT" the distributor is timed with TDC #4 I found this the hard way and finally had to buy a cd with the procedures on it. Send me an e-mail address and I will forward the associated pictures &
