Question about 2003 Saturn VUE

3 Answers

2003 Saturn Vue 3.0 V6. I have a coolant leak on the front passenger side of the engine compartment. This leak is located on the engine rear (opposite end from waterpump) and is on the engine side closest to the radiator. The engine has a block heater installed. Are there any drain plugs/freeze plugs/coolant connections near this location to be suspicious of? Or must I consider a head gasket or cracked block. Do you have other suggestions?

Is the block heater located anywhere near this location?

Isn't the block heater typically located in an engine freeze plug? I don't believe it is the tank-type circulating type spliced into a hose somewhere in the system.

Its hard to say but I just looked at a diagram of the engine compartment of your vue, and i would have the head gasket checked. It may not be blown, but those engines have a problem with leaking head gaskets. Our shop has done 4 or 5 this year alone.

But the block heater is not near the location you have described.

    Sean:
It is so hard to describe without pictures of a location. I know I said the rear (Opposite end from waterpump) but maybe I should clarify as rear half of the engine on the cylinder side closest to the radiator. This is actually a vehicle I would like to buy. The leak is very small and requires adding a 1/4 inch into the recovery tank about once per month. There is no coolant in the oil. Can a leak to the exterior such as a head gasket be fixed with a stop-leak or must the gasket be replaced? Do you have a ballpark cost of that?

A leak like that cant be fixed with a stop leak, and the repair parts and lobor would run ya about $1200.

It can be problem of drain plug loose or cracked drain line. The drain is located on the lower right of the radiator and is opened or closed with a screwdriver. It is a plastic plug that does not come out. The surge tank cap must be open for the antifreeze to drain. Also check the air filter if its getting clogged. The cabin air filter on the Saturn Vue is on the passanger side up on the firewall. I think there is like 3 or 4 screws to remove. It is on the upper flat part of the firewall. AC or evaporator drain line It's on the engine side firewall, about centerline between driver and passenger. May have to remove all the black plastic air ducting for the engine to see the drain. Trace the heater and air conditioning lines to where they go through the firewall. Look below the cluster of these four lines and you'll see something that looks like the spout of a water pitcher made of black plastic - this is the evaporator drain "line" exit point. It's about 3/8" diameter with a flapper type check valve behind it. Check all this lines and plugs and valves. But if all checks out ok then yes its a cracked head gasket and the head gasket needs replacement. Thanks. Keep updated for any more query. You can rate this solution and show your appreciation.

Yes , thru there are going the pipes to the heater core. But since a block heater is usually connected to them then the entire coolant circuit has been changed from factory status. The only way to know for sure the origin of the leak is to clean the engine thoroughly, pour a bright colourant in the coolant and run the engine - you will now see the leak clearly.

Overheating

Was the coolant old and weak? At ten degrees, a weak coolant could result in freezing and that can cause an engine freeze plug to burst open. Check the side of the engine block for signs of leakage around the freeze plugs. Another possibility is the heater hoses. They run along the passenger side of the engine as well. The last possibility is the heater core. If it leaks you may smell coolant inside the passenger compartment. You MAY get a wet floorboard on the passenger side. Coolant leaking from the core usually will fall into the condensation pan for the A/C and run out of the passenger compartment thru the firewall on the passengers side.

There could be many reasons why the coolant leaks, you may have a bad waterpump or maybe its a hose leaking but its hard to say without looking at it. the correct way would be to pressurize the cooling system to locate the leak or if it runs out with pressure then you would need to try and see where the flow is coming from. it sounds like maybe a pipe rusted and is now leaking or again maybe just a hose.good day.

I have a 2003 Saturn Vue 2.2L. The cooling fan is not comomt on when the engine is hot.

Have the coolant temperature sensor checked or replace.
That sensor is tied in with the cooling fans. When the coolant temp increases it turns on the fan.
It is usually located around the thermostat housing or screwed into the engine block with a 2 or 3 wire connector on it.

I have a 2003 vue with a 5 speed 4 cyl. engine. Having an issue starting, but cant seem to find any plugs. Are there plugs, and is so, where?

They are located at the center of the cylinder head. V-6: the v6 has two heads, front and rear. In each of those heads (front/rear)at the center, there are 3 ignition coils(black circular units- 6 units total) atop the sparkplugs with an electrical connector attached.

4-Cylinder: They are located atop the engine and at the center. There is a black plate/cover across the top of the engine, remove this to access the sparkplugs. Hopefully this helps

Cannot locate oil drain plug on 2004 Saturn Vue

It is probably a bit different on the 4-cyl engines than the V6 engines. I'll assume you have the V6 for the moment since those seemed to be more popular.

On the 3.5L V6, the drain plug is behind the passenger side wheel well and I believe takes a 17mm socket/wrench to remove.
